Birds Fly in the Rain; Top Cyclones, 6-1

The IronBirds picked up their first win at Ripken Stadium of the 2012 season on Friday night over the Brooklyn Cyclones, 6-1. Following an hour and 51-minute rain delay, the Birds came from behind to tie up the game in the sixth inning. Aberdeen put four more runs on the board in the seventh and took a five run lead in the eighth.

Following three quick outs for each team in the first, Brooklyn's Kevin Plawecki drove in the first run of the night. Plawecki's fielder's choice to short sent 3B Alex Sanchez home, giving the Cyclones a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Brooklyn's Brandon Nimmo slapped a double to left field but advanced no further. A ground-rule double by RF Will Howard to left field gave Aberdeen hope to score but strikeouts by Kimmel, Vega and Bernadina left the Birds with another scoreless inning after the bottom of the third.

The Iron Birds tied the game up with one run in the bottom of the sixth. 3B Torsten Boss earned his 5th RBI of the season, launching a line drive to right field. Howard rounded third and scored easily.

Just one inning later, Aberdeen took the lead for the first time. C Sam Kimmel stepped up to the plate with two outs and crushed a double to right field against relief pitcher, Jose Nivar. Vega tripled on a line drive to left field, continuing the two out rally. Roderick Bernadina singled Howard and Creede Simpson home following an error in left field by Cyclones' Stefan Sabol.

In the bottom of eighth, the Birds pulled away and advanced their lead, 6-1. After Joe Velleggia tripled on a fly ball to right field, Joel Hutter stepped up to bat. Hutter grounded the ball to left field for an RBI single, bringing in the final run of the night.

Jose Nivar picked up the win for the IronBirds after three inning of play, no hits and no runs scored; while Dawrin Frias got the loss for the Cyclones.

The series will continue Saturday, June 23 at 7:05 p.m. when Aberdeen hosts Brooklyn at Ripken Stadium. LHP Cameron Coffey will start atop the hill for the Birds while the Cyclones will turn to RHP Rainy Lara.
