-SPIKES WELCOME SCRAPPERS TO STATE COLLEGE: The State College Spikes face the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tonight in the first game of a three-game series, and two teams' first meeting of 2012. The Spikes and Scrappers have met 70 times over seven years, with Mahoning Valley holding a 33-27 all-time series lead. The Spikes are 16-14 all-time against the Scrappers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, and went 2-3 against the Scrappers at home last year.

-LAST GAME: Luis Heredia, the 17-year-old Pirates pitching prospect making his State College Spikes debut, led the way for a dominant effort with four scoreless innings of work, and the Spikes earned an 8-0 win over the Williamsport Crosscutters on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Heredia allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four. Jodaneli Carvajal and Barrett Barnes powered the offense with three hits apiece, and Carvajal's two triples tied a Spikes single-game record.

-HOLMES LOOKS TO GET COOKING ON MOUND: Right-hander Clay Holmes, the ninth-round draft choice of the Pirates in the 2011 MLB Draft, makes his professional debut tonight as he starts on the mound for the Spikes. Holmes was the valedictorian of his senior class at Slocomb (AL) High School and led Slocomb to a runner-up finish in the Alabama Class 3A baseball playoffs in 2011. Now residing in Tampa, FL, Holmes struck out 126 batters in 89 innings as a junior in 2010.

-SCRAPPERS SEND AVILES TO THE HILL: Right-hander Robbie Aviles is slated to start for the Scrappers tonight. Aviles makes his New York-Penn League debut this evening after pitching for the Arizona League Indians in 2011 and posting an 0-2 record with a 6.52 ERA in 9 2/3 innings over seven appearances. Aviles, the Indians' seventh-round draft choice in 2010, came back from the reconstruction of the UCL in his right elbow shortly after the draft to join the Indians' system last year.

-CRUMLICH, DIAZ SPARK SPIKES: Two of the Pirates' 2012 draft picks made their professional debuts with the Spikes on Thursday. D.J. Crumlich, the Bucs' ninth-round pick out of UC-Irvine, went 2-for-3 with his first pro RBI, while Chris Diaz, the PIrates' 11th round pick from N.C. State, dropped down a bunt single in the first inning for his first hit as a professional.

-SPIKE MARKS: Carvajal's .538 average is now third-best in the NYPL, his .647 on-base percentage is tops in the loop, and his 1.000 is tied for the league's best mark...Barrett Barnes is tied for the NYPL lead in times hit by pitch with 3...Jacob Stallings's father, Vanderbilt men's basketball head coach Kevin Stallings, was on hand for both of his son's first two pro games
