Lowell Scores 5 Early And Holds Off Lake Monsters 5-3 On Friday

LOWELL, MA --- The Lowell Spinners offense continued their hot start to the New York-Penn League season as they built an early 5-0 lead and had to hold off a Lake Monsters rally in the ninth inning for a 5-3 victory over Vermont on Friday night at LeLecheur Park.

The Spinners scored at least one run in each of the first four innings off Vermont starter Kurt Wunderlich, including a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning from Aneury Tavarez.  Lowell added another run in the second on a Williams Jerez two-out double and RBI single from Tim Roberson for a 2-0 lead.

The Spinners doubled the lead in the third as Jose Iglesias, at Lowell on a rehab assignment from Boston, led off with a single and scored on a two-run homer from David Chester for a 4-0 advantage. The Spinners scored their final run of the game in the fourth on a Kendrick Perkins RBI single off Wunderlich (0-1), who allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

Vermont's offense was quiet over the first eight innings of the game with just four hits, but the Lake Monster bats came alive for three runs on five hits in the ninth. John Wooten had Vermont's first hit since a leadoff single in the fifth when he smashed a one-out home run over the leftcenter field fence for his first professional homer. One out later the Lake Monsters put four straight hits together with a Phil Pohl single, Chad Lewis RBI double, Kelvin Rojas RBI single and Austin Booker single, but Chris Bostick grounded into a forceout to end the game.

Lowell starter William Cuevas tossed four scoreless innings with three hits allowed, while reliever Leandro Marin (1-1) gave up one hit over two scoreless innings to pick up the win. Tavarez was 3-for-5 with two runs and Chester was 2-for-3 to go along with their home runs for Lowell (4-1), which is hitting .322 as a team with 32 runs scored over its first five games.

Rojas and Booker both had two hits for the Lake Monsters (2-3), who have lost two straight by identical 5-3 scores after consecutive 7-4 victories. Brent Powers struckout five in three scoreless innings of relief and has tossed six scoreless innings in two appearances this season.

Lake Monsters and Spinners will play two more at Lowell with single games Saturday night and Sunday afternoon before Vermont returns home to historic Centennial Field for a six-game homestand June 25-30 against Connecticut and Lowell.
