Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers slashed eight runs on 12 hits on Monday night to beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 8-4 in the first game of the series from Segra Stadium.
After three-consecutive rainouts, the Pelicans (20-41) wasted no time getting on the board as they plated a run in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles from Carlos Sepulveda and Miguel Amaya set the table for Cam Balego who grounded out, but brought in a run in the process to make it 1-0 Birds off of Nivaldo Rodriguez (1-3).
The Woodpeckers (27-36) responded in the bottom half of the first with a two-run homer from Jake Adams to surge ahead 2-1.
In the fifth, Colton Shaver put two more on the board for Fayetteville with another two-run bomb that made it 4-1 Woodpeckers.
Enmanuel Valdez and Michael Papierski each knocked in a run in the sixth to extend the Fayetteville lead to 6-1.
Myrtle Beach collected two tallies in the seventh inning when D.J. Wilson laced a two-run double down the right field line to cut the lead in half and make it 6-3 Fayetteville. The Woodpeckers countered with another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Adams drove in his third run of the game on an RBI single that made it 7-3 Fayetteville.
After the Woodpeckers made it 8-3 on a sacrifice fly from Bryan De La Cruz in the eighth, the Pelicans forced a run across in the ninth when Grant Fennell tripled and scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-4.
Paul Richan (6-3) struck out a career-high nine batters, but surrendered four runs on five hits in his start for the Pelicans.
The Pelicans have now lost five in a row, but will look to rebound on Tuesday night against the Woodpeckers with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m.
The Birds will send RHP Erick Leal (0-0, 9.00) to the hill against RHP Luis Garcia, who makes his first start of the season for Fayetteville.
Coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on the Pelicans Baseball Network which is available on the TuneIn App, MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast and MiLB First Pitch app.
