Malvin Pena Name Carolina League Pitcher of the Week
June 10, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, VA - Earlier today, the Carolina League announced that RHP Malvin Pena was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 3rd to June 9th. It is the first weekly award for a Potomac player in 2019.
In his lone start this past week, Pena spun arguably Potomac's best start of the season. On Thursday night, Pena allowed just two hits over seven-shutout innings in a win over the Lynchburg Hillcats (Cleveland Indians). It was just the second time a Potomac starter had pitched at least seven innings this season, while the club matched a season low in hits allowed in the game with two.
After a rocky start to the season, the 21-year-old Pena has turned the corner over the past two weeks. In his past three starts, the right-handed starter is 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA. In 17.2 innings over that span, Pena has allowed just three runs on six hits and has struck out 14. The stretch includes his only two scoreless outings over his first 11 starts of the season.
An International Free Agent signed in 2014, this is Pena's first season at the Carolina League level. Pena pitched with the Short-Season Auburn Doubledays in 2017, split time between Auburn and the Hagerstown Suns in 2018, and then started the 2019 campaign with Potomac. Through 11 starts this season, Pena is 4-3 with a 6.22 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 50.2 innings pitched.
This is the first Pitcher of the Week award for Pena as a professional. His next start is currently slated for Wednesday night at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium.
The P-Nats are set to open up a three-game series this evening vs. the Down East Wood Ducks (Texas Rangers). The Wood Ducks clinched the first half Southern Division Championship last night and have the best record in the Carolina League. First pitch tonight is scheduled for 7:05pm.
