Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The Delmarva Shorebirds outlasted the Fredericksburg Nationals for a 13-8 win in ten innings on Wednesday night at FredNats Ballpark.

The Shorebirds (42-31) got on the board in the first inning thanks to a Darell Hernaiz two-run homer, his fourth of the year, and a Ryne Ogren RBI single.

The Nationals (24-50) managed to answer back in the second with a run of their own on an RBI groundout from Leandro Emiliani.

Jean Carmona extended the Delmarva advantage back to three with an RBI single in the top of the third.

The FredNats rallied in the sixth to tie the game. A run scoring wild pitch was followed by a dropped flyball which allowed a run to score to trim it to a 4-3 Delmarva lead. With runners at second and third, the Shorebirds brought the infield in but were unable to cut the runner down at the plate on a grounder, allowing Fredericksburg to tie the game at 4-4.

After Jake Boone singled to start the seventh, he then stole second and moved to third on a groundout. After a strikeout, Ricardo Mendez dropped down a bunt for a base hit to score Boone and give the FredNats their first lead of the day.

The ninth saw the game come apart at the seams for both sides. The Shorebirds managed to tie the game in the top half after Lamar Sparks tripled to open the frame and then scored on a wild pitch. With Hernaiz at third, TT Bowens hit a comebacker to the mound that was thrown away at the plate, allowing Hernaiz to score the go-ahead run. Carmona then stepped in and hit a flyball to center that was dropped which allowed Bowens to race home and put Delmarva up 7-5.

Boone began the home half of the ninth with a single before Zach Cornell walked. A sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position with a groundout from Mendez scoring Boone and moving Cornell to third. Junior Martina then stroked a single to center to score Cornell and tie the game at 7-7 to send it to extras.

The Shorebirds busted the game open in the tenth. After a strikeout, Sparks roped a single to left to score the international tiebreaker runner, with an error in left allowing Sparks to go to third to put Delmarva ahead. Janvrin then plated Sparks with a frozen rope single before Hernaiz drilled another base hit to left. Janvrin and Hernaiz then pulled off a double steal to put two into scoring position, with Bowens cashing in Janvrin with a sacrifice fly to center. Carmona continued the fun with another RBI single before Ogren was hit by a pitch. Cristopher Cespedes then pounded a base hit to score Carmona before Yorkislandy Alvarez laced a single to center to score Ogren and cap the inning with the Shorebirds ahead 13-7.

The FredNats managed to plate the international tiebreaker runner, but Rickey Ramirez secured the final out to give Delmarva a 13-8 win.

Thomas Girard (1-0) picked up the win in relief for Delmarva. Girard went two innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out two.

Troy Stainbrook (1-1) suffered the loss for the FredNats. Stainbrook allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits in just two-thirds of an inning, striking out one.

By the time this game was decided starters for both sides were far removed from the equation. Shane Davis began for Delmarva and allowed one run in 4.1 innings on two hits and three walks, striking out two. Rodney Theophile started for the FredNats and lasted four innings, conceding four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks, striking out five.

The Shorebirds got contributions up and down the lineup with eight of nine starters driving in a run and seven of nine scoring at least once. Hernaiz scored four times while also driving in two in a two hit performance while Sparks finished 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored, and an RBI.

Mendez drove in two for the FredNats while going 2-for-4 and was aided by Boone out of the no. 9 spot going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Shorebirds will try to ride this wave of momentum into their next matchup with the FredNats on Thursday, July 29 at FredNats Ballpark. Noah Denoyer (5-2, 2.70) gets the call for the Shorebirds while Jackson Rutledge (0-1, 18.00) goes for the FredNats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on Fox Sports 960 AM as well as streaming online on the IHeart app with Sam Jellinek. MiLB.TV coverage will be provided by the FredNats.
