Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Walking Off For The Broom
Lastings Milledge drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game Two and rehabbing New York Met Steve Trachsel threw a complete game in Game One, helping the Binghamton Mets to a doubleheader sweep of the Portland Sea Dogs, 3-1 and 8-7. Derran Watts homered in his second at-bat as a B-Met in the first game and Mike Jacobs and David Bacani each drove in two runs in the nightcap. Binghamton's taken three of the first four games in the five-game set with Portland.
More On Sweeps
Last night was Binghamton's sixth doubleheader of the season and the first one they swept. Three other times this year (Fri. vs. POR, 7/6 vs. NH, 5/4 vs. AKR) the B-Mets won the first game of a twinbill only to fall in Game Two. Binghamton, which is now 1-1-4 in doubleheaders, last swept a twinbill exactly a year ago yesterday, when they won 8-5 and 1-0 August 6th, 2004 vs. Trenton.
Getting Better in Binghamton
In addition to Trachsel, Binghamton's also hosting New York Mets second baseman Kaz Matsui as he recovers from a knee injury suffered June 16th at Oakland. Matsui played in the first game of the doubleheaders yesterday and scored a run in each game, going 2 for 5 overall. He's expected to bat second and play second with Binghamton for the final time today before returning to the Mets.
âPen Not So Mighty
Matt Lindstrom threw three scoreless innings in the second game yesterday to earn the win, the bullpen's first victory since Anderson Garcia beat New Britain June 30th. Over their last 20 games, B-Mets relievers allowed 64 runs, 56 of them earned, over 65 innings for an ERA of 7.75. Binghamton starters own eight of the team's last nine wins, four of which were complete games.
Close Shaves
Yesterday's 8-7 Game Two win was Binghamton's second straight one-run victory. Previously, Binghamton had lost nine consecutive one-run games since winning 4-3 June 26th vs. Erie. The B-Mets are 12-22 in one-run affairs this season.
On The Mound
RHP Yusmeiro Petit (6-3, 3.42) Last Time Out: Tue. @ HAR (W): 8 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 0 BB, 7 K (W 10-2)...Yusmeiro allowed a run in the first on back-to-back doubles by Josh Labandeira and Dan DeMent, but then retired the next 12 in a row before giving up a Cristian Guerrero solo homer in the fifth. The righthander also worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the seventh, the only time he had more than one baserunner on at a time. The win was Yusmeiro's fourth in his last five starts.
This Season: After being limited by a low pitch count early in the year, Yusmeiro's become Binghamton's workhorse, lasting at least seven innings in five of his last six starts, throwing two complete games over that stretch. The righthander's allowed three earned runs or fewer in 15 of his 18 starts and has walked two or less in all but one of his outings. Nine of the 13 homers he's allowed have come with the bases empty. Yusmeiro has yet to lose at home (3-0, 2.58, 10 GS), pitching better at NYSEG Stadium than he does on the road (3-3, 4.46, 8 GS).
Against Portland: Yusmeiro suffered his first loss of the season in his third start, April 19th at Portland. He allowed a David Murphy two-run double in the second and Mike O'Keefe reached him for a two-run homer in the fourth. Another run scored after he left the game, which Binghamton lost 5-4. Final line: 3 2/3 IP, 5 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 K.
Background: The Maracaibo, Venezuela native is in his fourth season in the Mets organization after signing as a non-drafted free agent in November 2001. Last season, the righthander was 12-6 with a 2.20 ERA in 26 regular-season starts between Low-A Capital City, High-A St. Lucie and Binghamton, finishing second in the minors with 200 strikeouts.
