Connecticut Defenders News Release

(Norwich, Conn.) -- The Norwich Navigators took advantage of two costly Harrisburg errors to take a 5-1 lead early and hold on for a 5-3 victory over the Senators at Dodd Stadium this afternoon.

Norwich scored runs in each of the first four innings (aided by a fielding error by shortstop Josh Labandeira in the 2nd and a throwing error by first baseman Larry Broadway in the 3rd). Two of the five runs against starter Rich Rundles (6-10) were unearned. The Navigators' bullpen combo of Merkin Valdez and Brian Wilson combined on 2.2 innings of shutout relief of starter Brian Burres (9-4). Burres tossed 6.1 solid innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out six to pick up his team-high 9th win of the season. The six strikeouts matched Burres' total from his three previous starts combined. Rundles (6-10) took the loss and Wilson picked up his 5th save in as many chances with the Navigators.

Red-hot Randy Walter led the Norwich offensive attack with three of the team's seven hits. The Navigators hit the road tomorrow for a trip through Binghamton and Portland. Righty Chris Begg (5-6) will get the start for the Navigators tomorrow night in Binghamton. First pitch is scheduled for 7pm.
