August 7, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Reading, PA- The Reading Phillies salvaged the finale of a three-game series by downing the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-1, Sunday afternoon at First Energy Stadium. Ryan Fleming homered and tripled, and left-hander Allen Davis waited out a 31-minute rain delay to post a complete-game victory.
Fleming started the scoring by launching a solo home run into the swimming pool over the rightfield wall with two outs in the bottom of the first inning against Fisher Cats' starter and losing pitcher Ismael Ramirez (7-11). It was the Phillies first home run against New Hampshire (55-58) this season.
Tim Gradoville added his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning, a two-run shot off Ramirez that barely cleared the left-field fence, giving Reading a 3-0 lead.
Ramirez allowed three runs on three hits over five innings to become the first New Hampshire pitcher to ever lose 11 games. He struck out six and walked one.
Davis (10-6) allowed one run on 10 hits in pitching his third complete game of the season, tied for the most in the Eastern League. The southpaw struck out five and did not walk a batter, becoming the league's fourth 10-game winner. In two starts against New Hampshire, Davis gave up one run in 16 innings (0.56 ERA).
Reading (55-60) added four more runs -two unearned- in the bottom of the sixth inning against New Hampshire reliever Jordan DeJong. Fleming led off with a triple and scored when Raul Tablado committed a fielding error on Juan Richardson's grounder. Brian Hitchcox stroked a two-run double to the right-centerfield gap, scoring Richardson and Jim Deschaine, who had walked, for a 7-1 lead.
Rob Cosby's team-leading 14th home run gave New Hampshire its only run, a solo blast deep over the leftfield fence with one out in the top of the sixth inning, cutting Reading's lead to 3-1.
Fisher Cats infielder Brad Hassey pitched a scoreless eighth inning in his second career pitching performance. He last took the mound August 12, 2004 at Gill Stadium against the Altoona Curve. Hassey was the second position player to pitch this season for the Fishers, following Jason Waugh's scoreless inning vs Erie June 21, at Fisher Cats Ballpark.
The Fisher Cats open an eight-game homestand with a twi-night doubleheader against the Harrisburg Senators on Monday night at Fisher Cats Ballpark beginning at 5:35pm. The Fisher Cats are slated to have left-hander David Purcey (0-2, 4.91) and right-hander Bubbie Buzachero (4-3, 3.73) get the starting assignments against Harrisburg right-handers Darrell Rasner (6-5, 3.81) and Justin Echols (8-5, 5.48), respectively.
