Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Double The Pleasure, Double The Fun
Three of the Binghamton Mets' five hits were two-out RBI doubles, as they earned a 3-1 win over the New Britain Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium last night. Back-to-back doubles by Wayne Lydon and Bobby Malek got the B-Mets on the board in third and Aarom Baldiris's two-bagger in the eighth gave Binghamton an insurance run in support of Brian Bannister, who allowed an unearned run in seven innings to pick up his EL-leading ninth win. Binghamton's taken two of the first three games from New Britain and has won four of five overall.

It's How You Start...
After a three-game stretch that saw no B-Mets starter last more than three innings, allowing 15 earned runs in five innings (27.00 ERA), Binghamton's staff has rebounded in the first six games of this road trip, with every B-Met starter lasting at least six innings, combining to allow five earned runs in 43 frames for a 1.05 ERA. However, it's been a different story for the bullpen, which has allowed 11 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings of work on this trip (9.58). Yesterday, Luz Portobanco and Anderson Garcia combined for two shutout innings, the first scoreless outing by the ‘pen on the trip.

Wayne With The Power
Lydon doubled again last night, his third straight game with a two-base hit. Over his last three games, the B-Mets centerfielder has pounded out three doubles and a triple, accounting for four of his 12 extra-base hits this season.

Tough-Luck Losers
Last night, New Britain starting pitcher Matt Yeatman gave up just two runs in six innings in a losing effort, continuing a solid, but fruitless, run for opposing starting pitchers against Binghamton. No opposing starter has picked up a win over the B-Mets in their last seven games. However, five of those starters have lasted at least six innings and given up three runs or less. Binghamton has picked up the win in three of those five games.

On The Mound
RHP Ken Chenard (5-6, 4.61)
Last Time Out: Sat. @ NOR (ND): 7 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 H, BB, 5 K (L 6-5, 10)...Ken gave up a pair of runs in the second on a Julio Cordido RBI double and a suicide squeeze bunt laid down by opposing pitcher Chris Begg, and another run in the third. However, Ken settled down to retire 15 of the last 16 to face him, including the final 11 in a row. He left the game with the score tied 3-3, lasting seven innings for the second straight start.

This Season: After a two-start stretch that saw him allow 11 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings, Ken has yielded just four earned in his last two starts, a 14-inning stretch. Ken has gone at least five innings in nine of his 14 starts and has held the opposition to three runs or less 11 times. Ken is tied for fourth in the EL with 11 home runs allowed, but he's given up just one longball over his last three outings after yielding six homers in his four starts before that. Against New Britain: Ken faced the Rock Cats three times in 2004, losing his lone start against them at New Britain Stadium on July 16th, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks, striking out five, in six innings. However, Ken left that game trailing 2-1 in a 5-3 B-Mets loss. 2004 vs. New Britain: 1-1, SV, 2.30, 3 G, GS, 15 2/3 IP, 5 BB, 15 K

Background: The Victorville, CA native is in his seventh pro season after being selected by New York in the 46th round of the 1998 draft out of Fullerton (CA) Junior College. Last season, he tied for the B-Mets team lead in wins, going 9-6 with a 4.45 ERA in 27 games, 17 of them starts. Before coming to Binghamton, Ken spent most of the previous three seasons with High-A St. Lucie.
