THE SHOUP SCOOP: TEAM NEWS & NOTES
ON THE ROAD...STILL: The Baysox have struggled on their 11-game road trip, going just 3-6 thus far. The Baysox (34-37) did take two of three games in Akron, marking their first series win against the Aeros this season. But Bowie lost three of four games in Trenton, and have opened a four-game series in Altoona with a pair of losses.
RITE AID EASTERN LEAGUE ALL-STAR VOTING UPDATE: After the first week of balloting in the RITE AID All-Star Balloting, Baysox fans have made Tripper Johnson and Eric DuBose their top choices to represent the team at the 2005 Eastern League All-Star Game in Portland. The top vote-getters in the Rite Aid Eastern League Fan Balloting thus far are as follows: POSITION PLAYERS - 1) Tripper Johnson; 2) Peter Bergeron; 3) Woody Cliffords; 4) Mike Huggins. PITCHERS - 1) Eric DuBose; 2) Scott Rice; 3) Chris Ray. Ray, of course, is currently ineligible to play because he is pitching for the Orioles. This weekend is the LAST chance to put your votes in, so make sure YOUR favorite Baysox is heading to Portland!!
BRANDON FAHEY'S DAY OFF: SS Brandon Fahey did not play in Thursday's game at Trenton, marking only the third time this season that Fahey has not played in a game. His last day off came on April 10, the fourth game of the season. The extra rest seems to have benefitted his work at the plate, as he has notched a hit in 14 of his last 16 games to raise his average from .229 to .259.
THE RLEAL DLEAL: With all of the excitement that surrounded closer Chris Ray for the first half of the season, RHP Sendy Rleal's season has flown under the radar a bit. Rleal, who took over as the Baysox closer when Ray was called up to the Orioles, earned two saves last week and has not allowed a run in his last 10 outings. He has allowed an earned run in just four of his 30 appearances this season, fashioning a 1.45 ERA with 41 strikeouts.
FORMER BAYSOX IN THE NEWS: A pair of Baysox alums were in the news this week, but for two very different reasons. RHP John Maine, who was 4-0 in five starts with the Baysox last season, was named the International League's Player of the Week for June 13-19. Maine turned in a stellar performance for Ottawa on June 16, hurling a complete game shutout against Richmond. He held the Braves to just four hits and no walks while striking out six. On that same day, longtime Baysox LHP Jeff Wilson was granted his release by the Reading Phillies. Wilson, who spent parts of four seasons in Bowie, was 0-2 with a 7.76 ERA in 22 games with the R-Phils.
ON DECK: The Baysox wrap up their road trip with a 7:05 p.m. contest in Altoona on Thursday. The team returns to Bowie on Friday for a three-game homestand against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, before hitting the road for three games at Norwich.
