Ottawa Champions News Release
Ottawa, ON - A two-out rally in the third inning was enough to give the Rockland Boulders a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Champions on Monday night.
The Champions' scoring frustrations continued, as they failed to capitalize on chances to take the lead in the game.
"We missed a lot of scoring opportunities tonight, and they didn't," said an unimpressed Lanier. "That's a very good hitting ball club over there, especially with people in scoring position."
Lanier cited their .321 with runners in scoring position and two outs, compared to the Champions' .237.
"We had a lot of opportunities, we just didn't get the key hit again."
The Boulders' offense was rolling early in the contest.
The third inning rally began with a two-out double from Stephen Cardullo. Four base hits in a row would score one run each. That gave the defending champions some breathing room.
However, Ottawa would give the Boulders a run for their money, crawling back into the game.
Mike Schwartz drove home Sebastien Boucher in the bottom of the fourth inning, while an RBI double in the sixth brought the Champions within one.
Late in the game, the Champions had chances to take the lead, but fell short. They stranded runners in scoring position in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Ottawa sent three batters to the plate, but had all three retired by Rockland closer Luis Sanz.
The loss puts the Champions at a 7-12 record, while the Boulders improve to 13-8, registering their first franchise win at RCGT Park.
Drew Cisco (1-3) pitched seven strong innings for Ottawa, allowing 10 hits and four runs, all earned while taking the loss.
"When you lose a game, you wonder what you could have done better against different batters," Cisco said. "The name of the game is for the starting pitcher to put his team in a position to win, and I felt my job was pretty well done."
The series against the defending Can-Am League champions continues Tuesday night, with a 7:05 first pitch at RCGT Park.
Tickets for the game can be purchased at OttawaChampions.com, and at the RCGT Park box office.
