Sussex County 2, Shikoku Island 1 (Game 1- 7 innings)
In the first game of a doubleheader, Sussex County hosted the Shikoku Island All Stars from Japan. Sussex County took the first game 2-1. Sussex County struck first with a run by RF Chris Valencia. Shikoku Island would come back to tie the game 1-1, before LF Johnny Bladel stole third base, which would set up the winning run. Bladel would finish the game 1-3 with a run and a stolen base.
The Miners' pitching staff had an excellent day only allowing four hits in the seven inning game. Matt Sommo started the game and earned the victory after six innings of work. Sommo struck out four batters and only allowed three hits. Joe Testa struck out three batters in the seventh inning to earn the save.
Ottawa 4, Rockland 3
Ottawa was able to eke out a close victory tonight over Rockland. After jumping out to a 3-2 lead, Rockland was able to come back and tie the game in the 8th inning. C/RF Joe Maloney was able to steal second base, which put him in position to score on a single by RF Stefen Henderson. Ottawa would come right back in the bottom of the inning, which was started with a double by CF Sabastian Boucher. Boucher would score on a single by P Nick Purdy, who came in to pinch hit. It was Purdy's only at-bat of the game. He would end up driving in the run that would earn him the win as a pitcher in the game.
Boucher ended up 1-3 with two runs and a walk. C/1B Bryce Massanari went 1-2 with a two- run double in the third inning. For Rockland C Marcus Nidiffer had a big day at the plate. He went 2-3 with two doubles and a run scored.
Shikoku Island 4, Sussex County 3 (Game 2 - 7 innings)
In the second game of the double header against the Shikoku Island All Stars from Japan, Shikoku County took the victory in another close game for Sussex County. The Miners put up a valiant effort coming back by putting up two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie the game. 3B Devin Thaut doubled to bring home 2B Ryan Pineda and RF Johnny Bladel. Bladel continued a strong day from the first game going 1-2 with two runs and a walk. Shikoku Island came back to score the game winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Relief Pitcher Koichi Kochinda earned the win for Shikoku Island. Starting pitcher Matt Branham had a solid outing for the Miners going 5.1 innings and only allowing two runs and had two strikeouts.
Quebec 5, New Jersey 0
Starting pitcher Karl Gelinas turned in a masterful performance for the Capitales tonight in a shutout victory for Quebec. He picked up his league lead-tying fourth victory of the season. He went all 9 innings and didn't allow a run. Opposing batters had just three hits against him and he struck out five and walked one. Gelinas faced just 29 batters in the game because of the three double plays he forced.
For Quebec the left side of the infield came up big at the plate as SS Yordan Manduley and 3B Mike Washburn combined to go 4-7 and score three of the team's five runs. Washburn hit his first double of the season as well. 2B Jonathan Malo went 1-4 with a run scored and an RBI. For New Jersey SS Peter Mooney was the lone Jackal to reach base twice going 1-2 with a walk in the game.
Laredo 3, Trios Rivieres 0 (In progress- 8th inning)
The interleague game between Laredo and Trios Rivieres is still in progress with Laredo leading 3-0 in the bottom of the 8th inning. Check canamleague.com for complete results
