Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - The Durham Bulls erupted for six runs in the third inning to pave the way for an 8-2 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Sunday afternoon in front of 6,280 at McCoy Stadium. The Bulls earned a series win in spite of Luke Montz's second home run that briefly put the PawSox ahead before the third-inning eruption.
Pawtucket starter Brian Johnson allowed a run in the very first inning, signaling things to come. Eugenio Velez doubled to left field and scored on consecutive wild pitches from Johnson.
The PawSox (15-10) moved ahead 2-1 when Montz launched an impressive homer to right-centerfield off of Bulls starter Scott Diamond. Thereafter, Diamond (3-0) cruised and earned the win for Durham (14-11).
The game - and the series - got away from Johnson and Pawtucket in the top of the third inning. After a leadoff walk to Velez, Mahtook hit an opposite field homer that but Durham ahead for good.
J.P. Arencibia then doubled before Luke Maile walked and a Corey Brown singled to load the bases. Leonardo Reginatto then popped up to second base; the infield fly rule was called to retire Reginatto. Sean Coyle did not catch the ball, however, and Arencibia raced home from third to make it 4-2.
After Alexi Casilla singled to load the bases again, Vince Belnome drew one of his three walks to plate the Bulls' fifth run. A Taylor Motter ground out and another double from Velez pushed two more runs across and capped a six-run third.
Johnson was chased with two outs in the third; he allowed seven runs on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Diamond did not allow a Pawtucket hit from the third inning through the fifth. His final line reflected just four hits, five strikeouts and one walk.
Arencibia singled home Mahtook in the top of the sixth off of Miguel Celestino to cap the scoring.
The PawSox hit the road Tuesday to begin a series in Toledo. The opener will begin at 6:30 P.M. with Henry Owens (1-1, 4.29) on the mound. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:15 P.M.
Pawtucket will return home on Monday, May 11th for a seven-game homestand. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
