Big Sixth Inning Helps Bees Take Game One vs Clinton

June 27, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Clinton, IA. - The Burlington Bees (31-43) ended their long losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Clinton LumberKings (42-33). Oliver Ortega (3-3) picked up his third win of the season after another shut out performance. Ortega pitched five hitless innings, did allow an unearned run, threw six walks, but did strikeout a season high seven batters. Oliver Jaskie (3-7) had a rough start, going five and a third innings, allowed five runs on seven hits, four walks, and four strikeouts.

Bees take momentum with a pair of early one run innings

Leonardo Rivas got the Bees a baserunner with one out on a walk and got to second after Torii Hunter singled to left. Rivas would later be thrown out trying to steal third, but Hunter was able to advance on the double steal attempt. With two outs, Franklin Torres singled to center which allowed Hunter to score from second and give Burlington a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Keinner Pina got on with a one out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a strikeout from Julio Garcia, Connor Fitzsimons drove in a run for the first time since June 11th on a single to center and Burlington now led 2-0.

Clinton would cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth after Johnny Adams scored on a wild pitch.

Barnes opens the game wide open

Kevin Williams Jr led the sixth off with a single to center and Keinner Pina followed him up with his second hit of the game. Fitzsimons then drew a walk and Clinton decided to make a pitching change now that the bases were loaded.

Adonis De La Cruz took over and struck out Zane Gurwitz for out number two. Then Jimmy Barnes stepped up to bat and came up with one of the biggest hits of his career. Barnes hit his second homerun of the season for a grand slam and gave Burlington a 6-1 lead. However, the Bees weren't done, as Rivas singled for his second hit of the game, stole second for his tenth steal and later scored after Hunter drove him in on a single to make it 7-1 Burlington.

Late runs from Clinton not enough

Adams and Billy Cooke drew walks in the seventh and Joseph Rosa drove in Adams on a single to right and Cooke would later score on a wild pitch to make the score 7-3. Rosa would end up grounding into a double play to end the game, giving Burlington the 7-3 victory.

Bees have big offensive night

Burlington scored five plus runs for the first time in 13 games and did a lot of things well tonight. Burlington was 4-16 with runners in scoring position and having that high of a number is huge. You will obviously have more opportunities to score runs and it will put more pressure on the opposing pitching, leading to mistakes. Although Burlington did finish with ten strikeouts, they got twelve hits in the game and looked like the offense that fans have been waiting for.

LumberKings can't capitalize on mistakes

Two hits is not a good offensive night, but Clinton still got plenty of runners on, drawing ten walks. However, because Clinton couldn't find the hits in the game, the LumberKings weren't able to put runs on the board and make the Bees pay for the large number of walks in the game.

The Bees pitching staff will need to have better control, because this is a Clinton offense that doesn't let you get away with mistakes like that two days in a row.

Williams keeps it going and gets lots of support

Kevin Williams Jr extended his hit streak to 18 games now after a 1-5 night at the plate but got some help from other players in the lineup. Rivas went 3-4 in the leadoff spot, Hunter went 2-5 with an RBI, Torres was 1-4 with an RBI, Pina was 2-4 with a walk, Fitzsimons was 1-3 with an RBI, and Barnes was 1-3 with four RBI's. Everyone but Julio Garcia got a hit in the game and Burlington scored all seven runs with two outs in the inning.

King Bee Player of the Game

Tonight's king bee was Jimmy Barnes. Barnes came up big with the grand slam to give the Bees a 6-1 lead in the sixth which gave the bullpen a big cushion.

Looking ahead

Bees will look to make it two wins in a row, as they will be back in action tomorrow against Clinton at 6:30. Neither team has named an expected starter yet, but Burlington would probably start Mitchell Traver, who made the first start after the all-star break.
