Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
Corey Shafer's bases-loaded single in a four-run sixth inning sent the IronBirds to a 5-3 victory over the Crosscutters on Sunday in Aberdeen, Md.
The IronBirds rallied from a 2-0 deficit with a decisive sixth inning against Crosscutters reliever Luis Valdez (0-1). Ryan Finan sparked the rally with a ground-rule RBI double. Nolan Reimold was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Shafer followed by lining a two-out, two-run single, with a pair of errors by second baseman Cameron Blair allowing Reimold to score all the way from first.
Steven Pearce gave the Crosscutters a 1-0 lead against Aberdeen starter Robert McCrory in the third, singling and crossing the plate on a double play. In the sixth, Blair scored on a fielder's choice by Euvi Solano. McCrory (1-0) gave up two runs, five hits, one walk and struck out two in six innings. The IronBirds padded their lead to 5-2 in the eighth on Robert Marconi's RBI single. Blake Owen walked two and gave up an RBI single to Pearce in the ninth, but escaped the jam for his second save.
Denny Nino and Pearce each went 2-for-4 for the Crosscutters. RHP Todd Redmond started for Williamsport and looked strong going 5 innings and allowing no runs and 3 hits.
