Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

The hot Aberdeen IronBirds (4-9) won their third straight game today in the series opener against the Williamsport Crosscutters (6-7) by the score of 5-3. After beating Brooklyn in a 14-inning affair on Saturday night, the IronBirds literally came back on Sunday without missing a beat, thanks to a 4-run 6th inning.

The IronBirds threatened early when Ryan Finan doubled to center field leading off the bottom of the second. With two outs, Corey Shafer came to the plate and laced a single to center field. IronBirds fans got loud quickly, thinking their ‘Birds were about to get on the board, but Crosscutters center fielder Brad Corley thought otherwise, as he threw a bead to the catcher, who tagged Finan out to end the threat and the inning.

Starter Bob McCrory was able to hold the Williamsport offense to just two runs through six innings pitched while striking out two and walking one. He left the game trailing 2-0 after 5 and a half innings, but was taken off the hook and into the win column thanks to the bottom half.

Finan got the ‘Birds on the board when he hit a ground rule double to right field scoring shortstop Ryan Steinbach. Shafer then followed with a single past first, scoring Finan and Mark Fleisher. When the Williamsport second baseman went to play the carom in short right, he booted the ball, allowing Nolan Reimold to scamper home with the third run of the play and fourth of the inning.

Garrett Olson, a sandwich pick in this year's MLB draft, made his debut in the seventh inning. Olson pitched two hitless, scoreless innings as he overpowered Williamsport batters, striking out five of the seven he faced.

An insurance run for Aberdeen helped IronBirds fans breathe easier, thanks to a Rob Marconi RBI single in the 8th. In the top of the ninth, IronBirds closer Blake Owen took the mound and earned his second save of the season, getting out of some early inning trouble.
