SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, allowed the River City Rascals to score in five different innings in suffering a 14-8 loss on Friday night.
The contest was a rematch of the 2014 Frontier League Championship Series and River City used four runs in the top of the first to take control. Trailing 5-1, the Boomers battled within 5-3 by scoring two runs in the fourth. River City came back with four in the top of the fifth answered by four from the Boomers in the bottom of the frame. Michael Valadez logged an RBI single in the fifth, the 204th of his career to set the Boomers career mark. Steve Rogers, Cam Sherrer, and Mike Schulze all drove home runs during the frame. Sherrer was activated from injured reserve before the game. The Rascals tacked on four more in the sixth to pull away. River City finished with 19 hits.
Valadez and Rogers collected three hits apiece in the game as the Boomers notched 13, a season high. Starter Anthony Gomez suffered the loss, working five innings. Evan Boyd worked 2.1 innings while Jake Joyce added 1.2 scoreless frames. Joyce struck out three.
The Boomers (6-8) continue the series on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. It is Princess Night at the ballpark and will also feature postgame fireworks presented by Wintrust Community Banks.
