Slammers Stage Ninth Inning Rally, But Fall Short vs. Miners

Marion, IL - The Slammers ninth inning comeback is cut short by a lineout to first, as Joliet (6-7) falls to Southern Illinois (9-4) by a final score of 3-2 on Friday night.

The Miners scored early against pitcher Andrew Strenge. CF Aaron Gates led off the first inning with a single and 2B Frank Martinez moved him over with a base knock of his own. RF Michael Early drove in Gates and Martinez scored on a double play. The Miners led 2-0 after the first.

Strenge settled down following the first inning, giving up two hits and allowing only three runners to reach base over the next five innings. The Slammers got on the board in the sixth behind 3B Mike Garza. The third baseman bombed his second homer of the year over the left field fence, trimming the Miners lead to 2-1.

Southern Illinois came back with a run in seventh inning. SS Niko Vasquez singled to lead off the inning. 1B Jerrud Sabourin moved him to second with a single, and Vasquez would come around to score on a sacrifice fly by LF Jon Minucci, making the score 3-1 Miners.

With closer Will Rankin in, the Slammers staged a two-out rally in the ninth inning. CF JD Williams doubled to with two down, and came around to score on an RBI single by catcher Jack Cleary, making the score 3-2. It was the first run scored against Rankin in 31 innings, dating back July of last season. Pinch hitter Adrian English then singled, putting two aboard with two outs. LF Phil Bates corked a line drive to the right side of the infield that was caught by the first baseman to stymie the Slammers comeback bid. Andrew Strenge (1-1) tossed seven innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one. Rick Teasley (2-1) earned the win. Sam Moore pitched a perfect inning in relief. The Slammers will be back in action on Saturday.
