Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-The South Bend Silver Hawks scored six runs in the seventh inning to come from behind and defeat the Dayton Dragons 7-3 in the first game of a four-game series on Monday night. South Bend's win moved the two clubs into a tie for the Midwest League Eastern Division playoff wildcard slot with 13 games to play.
With Dayton leading 2-1 going to the bottom of the seventh and Dragons starting pitcher J.C. Sulbaran having retired eight of the last nine batters, South Bend erupted for eight hits and six runs in the inning. After Sulbaran allowed a pair of singles to start the inning, Scott Gaffney replaced him and allowed hits to the next four batters including a two-run single by Jake Elmore that broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Silver Hawks the lead. Eight of the first nine batters in the inning reached safely before Mark James recorded the final two outs as the Silver Hawks built a 7-2 lead.
Dayton scored a single run in the ninth on an RBI hit by Tony Brown to close out the scoring.
Both teams finished the night with identical records of 26-30 in the second half to create a tie for the wildcard slot.
Dayton got the scoring started in the top of the third inning when Alex Oliveras doubled to left center and scored on a single to right by Josh Fellhauer to make it 1-0.
South Bend came back to tie the game in the fourth on a solo home run by Wright State University product Justin Parker, his fourth homer of the year.
Dayton took the lead back in the top of the sixth. Oliveras singled to center, went to second on Kevin Coddington's sacrifice, and scored on a two-out single to center by Byron Wiley.
Sulbaran (3-5) worked six plus innings, allowing five hits and three runs with no walks and four strikeouts. He allowed just four base runners over the first six innings but was charged with the loss.
Dayton finished with 10 hits. Oliveras and Humberto Sosa each collected two.
The Dragons meet South Bend again on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Ezequiel Infante (1-1, 2.70) will start for Dayton. Six of the Dragons remaining 13 games will be against South Bend.
