August 24, 2009 - Jon Townsend delivered a two run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Kernels the first game of a four game series with the Clinton LumberKings, 4-3, on Monday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Townsend finished the game 1-4 as Angel Castillo went 3-3 with a double and 2 RBI and Alexi Amarista was 3-4 with two doubles. Nolan Brannon went 2-4 as the Kernels had 11 hits in the game. Luis Nunez was 1-5 with 2 RBI and Ian Bladergroen was 1-4 with an RBI for Clinton.
Three Kernel relievers combined for 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Kyle Hurst. Christian Scholl struck out four over 2.1 innings and Nick Pugliese (3-2) picked up the win, allowing a hit and a walk while striking out one over an inning. Johnny Hellweg worked around two walks and an error in the ninth for his first save in his first Kernel appearance. Clinton reliever Blake Nation (3-5) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over 1.2 innings.
The win improves the Kernels second half record to 31-26 and 71-56 overall as Clinton falls to 25-31 and 65-61 overall. Game two between the Kernels and Clinton is Tuesday night at 6:35 pm from Perfect Game Field.
