Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - Shawn Griffin drove in four runs and Tim Melville struck out eight as the Burlington Bees dealt a serious blow to any playoff pretensions harbored by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin entered the five game series with the Bees trailing Burlington by three games for the Second Half Western Division Wild Card. But, the 5-1 loss at Community Field drops the Rattlers four games back with 14 games remaining in the season.
Josh Prince hit the first pitch from Melville of the top of the fourth inning over the wall in left for his first professional homer. That gave Wisconsin (57-69 overall, 23-33 second half) a 1-0 lead. But, the right-handed starter for Burlington would not give up another run. Melville tossed six innings, walked one, allowed four hits and matched his career high for strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fourth, an error and a walk put two Burlington runners on base against Rattlers starter Cody Scarpetta. Scarpetta got the first out with a strikeout, but Shawn Griffin hit a three-run homer to right on a 1-0 pitch and the Bees (56-70, 27-29) led 3-1.
Dusty Odenbach kept the Rattlers off the board with four strikeouts over two innings of relief. Then, the Bees offense added a couple of insurance runs.
Rattlers relief pitcher Corey Frerichs loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk in the bottom of the eighth. He got the first out, but walked Griffin to force in a run. Reliever Rigoberto Almonte entered the game and gave up an RBI grounder to Jose Bonilla before getting the final out of the inning.
Blaine Hardy continued the strikeout display by striking out the side in order in the top of the ninth inning.
On Tuesday, the Timber Rattlers and Bees will conclude a game that was suspended on July 7. The score of that game is 1-1 and the Rattlers have a runner at first with no outs in the top of the sixth. That game will be restarted at 5:00pm.
The regularly scheduled game is set for nine innings and will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game. RJ Seidel (1-2, 6.57) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. Mike Lehmann (4-5, 5.71) is set to go for the Bees.
