San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - The Visalia Rawhide scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to break open a close game en route to an 8-3 victory over the San Jose Giants on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. Visalia collected four singles while also taking advantage of two key Giants errors in the decisive frame to the take the opener of a three- game series. The loss was San Jose's sixth in a row at home.
Carter Jurica (2-for-5, HR, RBI) had two hits, including his third home run of the season, to lead the Giants offensively.
San Jose jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Jurica led off the bottom of the first with a home run to deep left field. The Giants remained in front until Visalia struck for a run in the top of the fourth against San Jose starter Shawn Sanford. Sanford, who began his outing with three no-hit innings, surrendered a leadoff triple to Mike Freeman in the top of the fourth. Freeman then scored the tying run when the next batter, Jon Griffin, grounded out to shortstop.
The Giants threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Jarrett Parker reached on a bunt single with one out before Alex Burg drew a walk. Jurica then singled with two outs to load the bases, however Joe Panik popped out to shortstop on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
The Rawhide then took their first lead of the contest with a two-run top of the fifth. Ryan LaPensee began the rally with a one-out double off the fence in deep left center field to prompt a pitching change. Phil McCormick (2/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) was summoned from the bullpen and he induced the next batter, Ender Inciarte, to groundout, but then Gerson Montilla blooped a double down the right field line to plate LaPensee with the go-ahead tally. McCormick followed by issuing consecutive four-pitch walks to Freeman and Griffin before a full-count walk to Yazy Arbelo forced home the second run of the frame. McCormick struck out the next hitter, Keon Broxton, to finish the inning and keep the deficit at 3-1.
Edward Concepcion (0 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO) relieved McCormick to start the top of the sixth and didn't retire any of the seven batters that he faced. Back-to-back singles from Raywilly Gomez and Carter Bell started the frame before a walk to LaPensee loaded the bases. Inciarte followed with a single to right bringing home Gomez with the first run of the inning. Montilla then hit a grounder to third that was fielded by Adam Duvall, however the throw home in an attempt to force out Bell bounced past catcher Andrew Susac for an error. Bell and LaPensee both scored on the play to extend the Visalia lead to 6-1.
The rally continued when Freeman delivered an RBI single to make it 7-1 and after Griffin reached on another throwing error committed by Duvall, Arbelo grounded out to first scoring Montilla with the fifth and final run of the inning.
Rawhide starting pitcher Taylor Siemens (2-2) earned the win after tossing six innings with one run and six hits allowed. He walked two and struck out eight. Siemens finished his outing by setting down seven consecutive hitters, including three strikeouts in a perfect bottom of the sixth.
The Giants cut the Visalia lead to 8-3 in the bottom of the eighth as Aubrey Huff led off with a single before Ricky Oropesa doubled into the right field corner with one out to put runners on second and third. After Susac popped out, Brennan Metzger blooped a single into shallow right center to score both Huff and Oropesa. Burg followed the run-scoring hit by drawing a walk, however Chris Lofton grounded out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bobby Haney singled with one out, but Huff struck out and Duvall grounded out to finish the game.
Sanford (5-6) was saddled with the loss after yielding two runs (both earned) on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out three.
