Big Hit Eludes Revs In Loss To Riversharks

Time and again, the York Revolution came close to notching the clutch hit in Tuesday night's opener, but were denied each time as the Camden Riversharks held on for a 3-2 win at Sovereign Bank Stadium, handing the Revs a loss in the opener of their season-long 10-game homestand. York's two-game winning streak came to a close, while Camden has now won three of its last four. The two teams will meet again in York on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Camden grabbed an early lead scoring a run in each of the first two innings after Revs starter Corey Thurman had recorded the first two outs both times. Johnny Drennen launched a home run to right in the first inning for the game's first run, just the third home run hit by the Riversharks all season, and Drennen's second. With two outs in the second, ninth place hitter Erik Lis, 1-for-19 with 11 strikeouts coming in, doubled to left field and scored on an RBI single to right-center by Yasser Gomez, making it a 2-0 game.

The Revs tied it in the bottom of the fourth, as Salvador Paniagua cracked a two-run double to right-center, evening things at 2-2.

Camden answered right back, as Paddy Matera led off the fifth with a home run that sailed directly over the left field foul pole, providing what turned out to be the final run of the night. It was the second home run of the season for Matera, and the second of the night for a Camden team that doubled its home run total for the year.

Both teams had chances in the later innings, as Camden stranded 10 runners for the game, and York left 11 on base.

The Revs had a close call in the bottom of the seventh when Brian Burgamy led off with a single to center, and Andy Marte drove a ball deep to left-center, but it was caught just shy of the fence on a terrific grab by Drennen for the first out. Reliever Jordan Ellis then induced a double play grounder to get out of the inning.

The Revs threatened again in the ninth inning when Tyler Graham led off with an infield single. The Revs' fastest base runner was thrown out at second, however, on an attempted sacrifice bunt for the first out. Andres Perez then sent a deep fly ball to left-center, but like Marte's drive in the seventh, came up just shy of the fence for the second out. Burgamy followed with a deep single off the right field fence, but former York outfielder Chris Walker quickly got the ball back to the infield, keeping Eric Patterson at third base, representing the tying run. Down to their final out, Marte pulled a ground ball toward the hole on the left side of the infield, but third baseman Juan Martinez, another former Rev, ranged to his left to cut it off and made the throw to second to end the game.

Thurman (1-2) suffered the loss, charged with three runs in 5.1 innings. York's bullpen allowed no runs, however, combining with Thurman to strand five runners, all in scoring position from the fifth inning on.

Camden starter Brian Bass (1-2) picked up the win, tossing six innings for the second time in his three starts. The righty managed a quality start despite five walks, two of which scored on Paniagua's double.

Notes: Burgamy and Paniagua led the Revs with three hits apiece. For Paniagua, it was his second consecutive three-hit game, as he had hit safely in six consecutive at-bats through the sixth inning. The Revs were denied a three-game winning streak for the third time this season. It was the 10th time in 12 games so far this season that the final score was decided by three runs or fewer. All six losses have been decided by two runs or fewer. Thurman falls to 12-3 lifetime against the Riversharks. York's Brett Tomko (0-1, 1.29) will face Camden's Keith Weiser (0-2, 9.00) in Wednesday's game. It's Pizza Hut Night at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
