TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo Mud Hens (26-27) scored six runs in the first inning to beat the Iowa Cubs (25-29) by a score of 9-3, Tuesday at Fifth Third Field.

The I-Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Nelson Maldonado and a solo home run from Nelson Velazquez, but they wouldn't hold the lead for long. Toledo put up a six-spot in their half of the first to take a 6-2 lead.

Their six runs were highlighted by a solo home run from Robbie Grossman, a two-run double from Josh Lester and RBI singles from Jamie Westbrook and Zack Short. Both teams were held off the board until the fourth, when Velazquez hit his second home run of the game to bring the I-Cubs within three, at 6-3.

Wyatt Short kept Iowa in the game, relieving starter Robert Gsellman and throwing three scoreless frames. Short allowed just one walk while striking out five, throwing 64% of his pitches for strikes. Once he left the game, Toledo got back on the board, scoring runs in each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, growing their lead to six.

Westbrook and Riley Greene each had RBI singles, while Short used an RBI double to bring the score to 9-3. The Mud Hens' relievers were nearly perfect, combining to throw five scoreless innings. They allowed just one hit while striking out four to earn the win in game one of the series.
