
Big First Inning Dooms Roadrunners

HARLINGEN, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners allowed seven runs in the first inning in a 12-7 loss to the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings Wednesday night at Harlingen Field.
With the loss plus an Amarillo loss Wednesday night, Edinburg remains in first place by a game and a half.
The Roadrunners (41-29) got on the board in the first against Luis Montano (7-4). Wilmer Pino started the game with a single and two outs later came into score on an RBI single by Ambiorix Concepcion. Wilson Batista followed with a single and then Carlos Hereaud drove in Concepcion from second with an RBI single giving Edinburg the 2-0 lead.
The WhiteWings (37-35) sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first against Eric Montoya (8-4). RBI singles by Yuerys Tejeda, Leivy Ventura and Wellington Dotel quickly gave RGV the lead. With the bases loaded, Eric Gonzalez hit a two-run double that allowed Ventura and Dotel to score. Dominic DiRicco followed with another two-run double that capped the scoring giving RGV the 7-2 lead.
Arlon Quiroz started the bottom of the third with a walk and then stole second base. Gonzalez followed with an RBI single scoring Quiroz from second. Gonzalez then stole second and came into score on an RBI single by Luany Sanchez extending the WhiteWings lead 9-2.
Edinburg responded in the top of the sixth sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four runs in the inning. Hereaud led off with a single and then moved to second on a wild pitch. After Alexis Hernandez was walked, Eddie Wilson hit an RBI single to left field scoring Hereaud from second. Albert Gonzalez reached on a fielder's choice and Pino was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Felix Molina then hit a two-run single to left that allowed Hernandez and Gonzalez to score cutting RGV's lead 9-6.
Wellington Dotel led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and then two outs later scored on a wild pitch from second base making it 10-6 RGV.
In the top of the seventh, Edinburg picked up another run after Felix Molina hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded allowing Hernandez to come in and score making it 10-7 RGV.
Back-to-back solo home runs by Ventura and Dotel in the bottom of the seventh extended the WhiteWings lead to 12-7.
Mickey Cassidy pitched the final three innings picking up his fifth save of the season and giving RGV the 12-7 victory.
The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play a doubleheader Thursday night at Harlingen Field that will consist of two seven inning games. Mark DiBernardo (6-5) is expected to face Andres Rosales (4-3) in game one and Carlos Rangel (5-6) is expected to Johnny Montoya (0-1) face in game two with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
