Harrisburg Senators News Release
The Harrisburg Senators scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a late lead, and held on for a 9-6 victory over the Altoona Curve on Sunday evening at Metro Bank Park, in front of a crowd of 4929. Â The Senators (61-54) are now just 5.5 games behind the Curve for first place in the Eastern League's Western Division, and remain 2.5 games behind Bowie for the second and final playoff spot in the division.
Chuck James (8-0) worked three innings in relief, allowed one run, and earned the win for the Senators. Â Ramon Aguero (2-4) took the loss for Altoona (66-48), as he allowed the four runs in the eighth. Â Cole Kimball retired the only three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning, and picked up his fourth save. Â Brad Coon was the star on the offensive side, collecting four hits--two doubles, a triple, and a single--three runs driven in, and a run scored. Â The Sens had eight hits in total, getting one apiece from Marvin Lowrance, Edgardo Baez, Ofilio Castro, and Devin Ivany. Â Leadoff hitter Josh Johnson walked three times in the victory.
The Sens took the first lead of the game with two runs in the first inning, as Jesus Valdez drove in Johnson with a sacrifice fly, and Coon scored on an error. Â Two two-run home runs in the second and third by the Curve put them in front 4-2, but the Senators came back with three in the fourth to re-take the lead. Â Johnson worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in the first run, and then Coon singled to drive in two more. Â Altoona went back in front 6-5 with single runs in the fifth and sixth, setting up the climactic eighth inning.
In that eighth, the Senators sent eight men to the plate, collected a single, a double, a triple and four runs scored. Â Coon collected the only RBI hit, a triple which brought home Devin Ivany. Â Prior to that, Tim Pahuta had driven in a run with an RBI groundout, and Aguero had allowed two more runs to come across with two balks. Â In total, Aguero retired two batters and gave up four runs, with a wild pitch and two balks.
The win gives the Senators a 2-1 series victory, and keeps them on pace with Bowie for the second playoff spot in the Western Division. Â The Sens have a day off on Monday, and then start another three-game home series, against the Binghamton Mets. Â The B-Mets are 55-60 on the year. Â Right-hander Brad Peacock (1-0, 3.75) starts on Tuesday night for the Sens, against LHP Mark Cohoon (1-3, 6.63) of Binghamton. Â The first pitch is scheduled for 7 PM, with radio coverage beginning at 6:45 on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com.
