New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats slammed three home runs as part of a 12-hit outburst to crush Akron, 11-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Joe Benson, Erik Lis, and Juan Portes all homered while Steve Singleton turned in a game-high three-hit performance to lead the `Cats.
The Aeros got on the board first when Miguel Perez and Lucas Montero opened the third with consecutive singles and advanced on a sac bunt before Lonnie Chisenhall's sacrifice fly plated Perez from third. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Rock Cats broke out for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Benson delivered a one-out solo homer - his team-leading 18th of the season - to tie the game. Erik Lis added a three-run shot to center that put the Rock Cats on top, 4-1.
Akron's John Drennen had a solo homer in the top pf the sixth before the `Cats tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Singleton started the scoring spree off with an RBI double and scored on a bases loaded Chris Cates' walk. Benson and Estarlin De Los Santos knocked in runs on grounders to break open the game, 8-3.
Portes joined the home run parade with a solo shot to start off a three-run seventh.
Kyle Gibson (7-5) scattered seven hits for three runs over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win. He struck out four. Steve Hirschfeld and Carlos Gutierrez combined for 3 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen for the Rock Cats.
Alex White (6-6) was hammered for eight runs on seven hits in five innings to take the loss.
