(Buffalo, NY) - Jon Berti grounded a walk-off RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning, his fourth hit of the night, and despite not allowing an earned run for the first 12 frames the Pawtucket Red Sox fell to the Buffalo Bisons, 2-1, on Friday night at Coca-Cola Field. The PawSox finished the month of July with a 4-22 record.

Berti's two-base hit came against reliever Noe Ramirez (4-1) and scored Caleb Gindl, who had singled after Ramirez retired the first two batters of the inning. Pawtucket left-fielder Jeff Bianchi was able to dig the ball out of the corner and throw to shortstop Deven Marrero, but his relay to the plate was not in time to get Gindl and Buffalo celebrated its 11th victory in the last 14 games played.

After the Bisons plated an unearned run against PawSox starter Jess Todd in the fifth, neither team scored between the 6th and 13th innings before Berti's heroics. Buffalo reliever Greg Burke (3-0) pitched three scoreless innings in the 11th, 12th and 13th to earn the victory, twice stranding a runner in scoring position in the process.

Pawtucket scored its lone run against Bisons starter Randy Wolf in the top of the fourth with two outs. Garin Cecchini worked a walk and came across one batter later when Marco Hernandez lined an RBI double into the gap in left-center. Wolf allowed just two hits and three walks in eight full innings of work, retiring the final 10 men he faced.

Todd allowed only six hits and one walk in six quality innings of work. Buffalo scored in the fifth after Berti singled with one out and Hernandez, the second-baseman, committed a fielding error and then one batter later a throwing error attempting to turn a double play on a grounder hit by Jonathan Diaz.

Matt Barnes tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Todd, working his way around two hits and three walks, while Ronaldo Belisario kept Buffalo off the scoreboard in the 10th and 11th innings on only one base hit.

Allen Craig (2-for-6, three strikeouts) collected two of Pawtucket's five hits on the night. Berti (4-for-6, RBI, run) led the Bisons 11-hit effort.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday night with first pitch at 7:05pm. Right-hander Keith Couch (4-9, 6.15) will get the start for Pawtucket while Buffalo has yet to announce a probable pitcher. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.

The PawSox will return to McCoy Stadium on Thursday, August 6th for the first of a four-game series against Syracuse. Good seats for all games in the series are available; call 401-724-7300 or visit the PawSox online at www.pawsox.com to get them now.
