Charlotte Knights News Release
(Indianapolis, IN) - A pair of unearned runs for the Indianapolis Indians in the first inning proved to be enough as the Knights dropped game one of a three-game series 5-1 from Victory Field. The loss was the first against the Indians in 2015, after the Knights swept the West Division leaders in a three-game set in June.
Chris Volstad shined on the mound for the Indians, allowing one run over seven strong innings to earn his eighth win of the season. The right-hander tied his season-high with seven strikeouts in the game, and allowed two or fewer earned runs for the fifth consecutive outing.
Brad Penny was solid on the mound as well, but he was snake bitten by a season-high five Knights errors in the game. The veteran righty allowed only one earned run (four runs) on six hits over six innings pitched. The loss was his fifth of the season and second in as many starts after not losing a decision from May 9th -July 21st.
The Indians added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Keon Broxton recorded and RBI-ground-out to give Indianapolis a 3-0 lead. Steve Lombardozzi made it 4-0 with a two-out, RBI-single a batter later to push the advantage to four runs.
Drew Garcia scored the only Knights run in the game in the top of the sixth inning. The switch hitter led-off the frame with a double and later scored on a Jason Coats RBI-ground-out. The double was the only extra-base hit for a Knight in the game.
Pirates top-five prospect Alen Hanson led-off the seventh frame with a triple against Terance Marin, and scored a final insurance run on a Gustavo Nunez sacrifice-fly to push the advantage to 5-1. Hanson ranks second in the International League with 10 triples on the season, behind Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Ben Gamel (12). Marin tosses two innings of one-run ball in relief of Penny.
Matt Davidson led the Knights offense with two of the team's five hits. His 2-for-4 night was his second multi-hit effort in his last five games.
The loss gave the Knights an even 15-15 record for the month of July, and the team has still yet to have a losing record in a month this season. The two teams will begin the month of August with the continuation of their weekend series as they play a 7:05 p.m. ET game on Saturday night. Scott Carroll is set to take the mound for Charlotte against Pirates No. 1 prospect Tyler Glasnow in his Triple-A debut.
