Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries wrapped up their three-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks with a 7-5 win on Thursday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Win was the third straight for the Birds' and their second series sweep of the 2016 season.
The Canaries trailed for much of the afternoon, struggling to find any type of momentum against Redhawks starting pitcher Jose Almarante. The right-hander held the Canaries over the first five innings, but ran out of gas in the bottom of the 6th inning, allowing four runs to score. Cameron Monger tied the game up a 3-3 with his clutch, two-out triple, later scoring the go-ahead run on an Aaron Owen RBI single.
Canaries starting pitcher Ray Hanson made his second start of the season for the Birds, but did not factor in the decision after leaving the game with one out in the top of the 7th inning. The right-hander carried the 4-3 lead into the 7th, before giving up a one-out solo homerun to Kes Carter, who tied the game up at 4-4 with his 7th homerun of the season. Hanson gave up his final hit of the afternoon on a Ryan Pineda triple to set up the eventual go-ahead run.
The Birds battled their way back again in the bottom of the 7th inning when David Bergin blasted a two-out, two-run homerun over the centerfield wall to make it a 6-5 Canaries lead. The Birds would add an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th inning, but Bergin's 10th homerun of the season proved to be the game winner for the Birds on Thursday afternoon.
Dylan Thompson was the first out of the bullpen for the Birds, holding the Redhawks scoreless on one hit over 1 2/3 innings of work. Billy Waltrip picked up his first save in a Canaries uniform after striking out two batters in the top of the 9th inning to help lead the Canaries to the series win.
Darwin Perez paced the Canaries offense, going 2-for-2 at the plate, picking up a walk and two runs scored on the afternoon. Bergin finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cameron Monger continued his hot hitting, going 1-for-3 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored in the win.
The Canaries have an off-day on Friday, but return to action on Saturday night with a three-game road series down in Grand Prairie, TX. The Canaries will open up the series with a double header starting at 4:05 PM. Fans can listen to all the action on Sioux Falls Sports Radio, AM-1230, FM-98.1 KWSN.
The Birds return home on Monday, July 25th when they open up a five-game homestand against the Laredo Lemurs and Sioux City Eplorers.
