GARY, IN- The Gary SouthShore RailCats (31-28) could not beat the rain or the Laredo Lemurs (33-27) in a 7-1 game that was called after the end of the 8th inning.

Taylor Black was charged with the loss for the RailCats in his first start of the season. Black struggled with his location in the first inning and allowed two runs, but shut down the Lemurs in the next three frames.

Jose Nivar earned the win for Laredo in his first career start. The hard-throwing righty went five innings and allowed one run on four hits. Matt Bywater and Kamakani Usui combined for three innings of hitless relief.

The Lemurs jumped on top in the 1st inning off of two walks, a hit-by-pitch, and a RBI fielder's choice.

The RailCats didn't score until the bottom of the 3rd inning. Randy Santiesteban homered to left field and touched 'em all for the first time in his professional career.

Laredo blew the game open in the 7th and 8th innings. The Lemurs got to Travis McGee for three runs in the 7th and scored two runs on Moises Melendez in the next inning. Two of the 7th inning runs came on a home run by former RailCat JD Pulfer.

The Cats' defense was on the field prepared to begin the 9th inning when the rain delay began at 10:07 PM. The teams waited out a delay for 34 minutes before the game was called at 10:41. This was the first game shortened by rain for the RailCats in 2016. The home opener was postponed after the 2nd inning but was completed the next day.

Alex Crosby was the only RailCat with a multi-hit game. Six RailCats were held hitless in the eight-inning game.

The RailCats play host to the Lincoln Saltdogs for a three-game series starting tomorrow. The division-rival Saltdogs hold a 3.5 game lead over the RailCats. First pitch is at 7:10 PM and coverage begins at 6:45 on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
