December 26, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence Bruins center Patrice Bergeron went on an offensive tear in Canada's first game of the 2005 World Jr. Championships, notching two goals and two assists to lead his team to a 7-3 win over Slovakia on Saturday. The tournament is being held in Grand Forks, North Dakota and Thief River Falls, Minnesota. Bergeron, who won the gold medal with Canada at the 2004 World Championships last spring, left the Bruins on December 13 to join Canada. In 25 games with the Bruins, Bergeron has 10-17-27 totals, ranking third on the team behind Andy Hilbert and Brad Boyes. He will return to the Bruins at the conclusion of Canada's run in the tournament.
Canada, which is considered to have a strong chance at taking home the gold, will play next on Monday against Sweden. The Canadians are playing in Group B, along with Slovakia, Sweden, Finland and Germany. Group A features the U.S.A., the Czech Republic, Russia, Switzerland and Belarus.
Team U.S.A., the defending World Jr. champions, skated to a 5-4 win over Russia on Saturday. The Stars & Stripes take on Switzerland on Monday. Each country plays each team in its group in the Preliminary Round, which goes through December 30. The Quaterfinal Round takes place on January 1, the Semifinal Round on January 2, the Relegation Round on January 3 and the Medal Round on January 4.
The Bruins return home to action to host the Lowell Lock Monsters on Sunday, December 26 at 4:05 p.m., and Hartford on Monday, December 27 at 7:05 p.m.
