Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Anthony Bemboom drove in two runs and Chad Hinshaw had three hits as Arkansas defeated Corpus Christi 4-2 Wednesday night at Whataburger Field before 4,648.
The Travelers (25-27; 61-60), who won for just the second time in 13 games, received a victorious start from Sean Newcomb (2-0), the Angels' first-round draft choice last summer. Rated by Baseball America as Los Angeles' No. 2 prospect, Newcomb struck out eight over five innings and 93 pitches (57) vs. four hits and three walks. He grappled with command at times, walking back-to-back hitters with two away in the fourth. He was dominant at times, twice striking out three straight.
Greg Mahle worked a one-run ninth for his 13th save in 16 attempts, Danry Vasquez plating Conrad Gregor (walk). Eduard Santos and Danny Reynolds provided the bridge from Newcomb to Mahle.
Corpus Christi (29-23; 77-45) stands 7-4 against Arkansas in the season series.
Hooks lead-off man Leo Heras greeted Newcomb by homering into the teeth of a 22-mph wind off Corpus Christi Bay, staking Chris Devenski to a 1-0 advantage. Heras won the lefty-on-lefty matchup by drilling a 2-0 pitch over the right-center field power alley.
Arkansas scored a pair of two-out unearned runs during the third, Raywilly Gomez, Hinshaw (RBI), and Brian Hernandez (RBI) singling consecutively. Second baseman Chan-Jong Moon's fielding error led to the game-tying run, as lead-off hitter Bemboom reached on a mishandled grounder.
Devenski (7-4) went on to finish five frames in which he allowed four hits and four walks with two strikeouts. The former Cal State Fullerton star threw 100 pitches (61).
Reliever Aaron West yielded Arkansas' third run. Ruben Sosa opened the sixth with an infield single, swiped second, advanced to third on Drew Maggi's sacrifice bunt, and home when Bemboom lined a single to left.
Sosa and Bemboom were in the middle of things again as the Travelers added on against Travis Ballew two innings later. Sosa ripped a lead-off double and after Drew Maggi's single, Bemboom produced an RBI ground out.
Sosa and Maggi own eight-game hitting streaks.
Ruben Alaniz (4-3) draws the pitching assignment Thursday against Arkansas' Michael Brady (6-5) as the clubs meet in the series finale at 7:05. It's Thirsty Thursday, with discounted beer and soda from Stripes.
