Okay, those numbers have no "cash value" attached, but they were winning numbers for the RockHounds Wednesday night.
Each of the first seven 'Hounds batters in the third hit safely, leading to a five-run inning (and a 6-0 lead) in a 10-1 win over the Springfield Cardinals. Coupled with losses by Corpus Christi and Frisco, both of the RockHounds' magic numbers were reduced by two, now standing at eight to clinch a playoff berth and 13 in the second half South Division pennant race (see below).
Chris Jensen showed the form that made him a 2014 Texas League Postseason All-Star, going six strong innings for his eighth win. The right-hander allowed one run (earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out eight.
The 'Hounds backed Jensen's quality start with a 15-hit attack (virtually half of the hits in succession in the third), one in which eight batters had at least one hit, seven scored at least one run and six had at least one RBI (there were 10 single-run RBI swings ... no multiple-run hits).
Ryon Healy led the club with three hits, including his 10th home run of the season, a line drive that cleared the left field bullpen in the seventh.
The teams have split the first two games of the three-game set and meet at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at Hammons Field in the rubber game.
The RockHounds
... are 35-17 in the second half and 70-52 overall (equaling their season high at 18 games over .500 at 69-51) ... have won eight of their last ten and 10-of-13 ... are 24-10 in their last 34 games (a .705 winning percentage) ... are 5-6 against Springfield (4-2 at Security Bank Ballpark and 1-4 at Hammons Field) ... are 41-22 at Security Bank Ballpark and 29-30 on the road ... are 45-33 vs. the South Division and 25-19 vs. the North.
Kibbles & Bits
STAT OF THE DAY: The RockHounds' win Wednesday was the first by the road team in the last eight games of the series between the 'Hounds and Cardinals. That being said, Springfield (which saw a five-game home win streak snapped) is now one game under .500 at home, leaving just three Texas League clubs with winning records at their home yards - - - Northwest Arkansas (35-27), Corpus Christi (35-24) and the RockHounds, who own the league's best home field mark (41-22 at Security Bank Ballpark).
- Ryon Healy (3-for-6, home run, three runs, two RBI) has hit in five straight games (8-22, .364) and in 17 of his last 18 games (29-for-78, .372).
- Jaycob Brugman reached base in 3-of-6 plate appearances in the leadoff spot. He doubled and scored (on the first of Josh Whitaker's two RBI) and sparked the five-run third with a leadoff single. Brugman has now reached base in 13 of his last 14 games.
By The Numbers
Texas League South: Tuesday night, the RockHounds were the only South Division team that didn't post a win. Wednesday, the 'Hounds were the only club in the division to come out on top. Corpus Christi fell (at home) to Arkansas, 4-2 ... Frisco lost (2-1) at Tulsa ... and San Antonio was blown out at home (12-2) by Northwest Arkansas. Corpus Christi (29-23) falls six games out of first place, with Frisco (24-27) now 10.5 back and San Antonio (24-28) trailing by 11 games.
Magic numbers:
- Eight (8) to clinch a playoff spot (eliminating Frisco) ... any combination of RockHounds wins and RoughRiders losses
- Thirteen (13) to clinch the second half pennant (over Corpus Christi) ... any combination of RockHounds wins and Hooks losses
Games remaining:
The RockHounds have 18 games to play in the regular season: Frisco (six, three home and three road), Corpus Christi (four, home), San Antonio (four, road), Tulsa (three, road) and Springfield (one, road).
