Beloit Bats Beat Kernels, 11-8

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Beloit Snappers topped the Kernels 11-8 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Monday night. Beloit smashed out 18 hits, recording at least 2 hits in 8 of the 9 innings. The Snappers homered 3 times on the night. Andy Workman drove in 4 runs, including a home run, for the Kernels while Alex Yarbrough scored 3 runs. Yarbrough and Gary Mitchell both tripled.

The Snappers were up 3-0 after the 2nd inning. Miguel Sano's RBI sacrifice fly, along with a RBI single by Kennys Vargas put Beloit up by a pair in the 1st inning. Eddie Rosario, who went 3-6 with 4 RBI, pushed a run across with a RBI single in the 2nd inning.

The Kernels scored 5 times in the 3rd inning to take a brief 5-3 lead. Cedar Rapids took advantage of a missed catch by Beloit right fielder Nate Roberts. With 2 outs Roberts allowed a fly ball to hit off of his glove, bringing home Kevin Moesquit. After Alex Yarbrough was hit by a pitch, Zach Borenstein's RBI single brought home Eric Stamets. Andy Workman then followed with a 3-run home run to left center, getting into double-digits with home runs on the year with 10.

The Snappers quickly rebounded to take a 6-5 lead in the 4th inning. Wang-Wei Lin lined a 3-run home run down the line in right to put Beloit up again. The lead became 7-5 in the 5th inning on Drew Leachman's solo home run. However, the Kernels tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of the 5th inning. Eric Stamets singled to begin the frame. Alex Yarbrough's RBI triple brought Stamets home, and Yarbrough scored on Andy Workman's RBI sacrifice fly.

Beloit quickly responded with 2 runs in the 6th inning, taking a 9-7 lead. Eddie Rosario's 2-run home run brought Nate Roberts home, as well. That meant the end for Kernels starter Frank De Jiulio. Frank De Jiulio (4-6) went 5-plus innings, allowing 9 runs on 12 hits. He struck out 1 and walked 5.

Beloit tallied single runs in the 7th and 8th innings, pushing the lead to 11-7. Eddie Rosario's 7th inning RBI triple scored Wang-Wei Lin, who had reached on an error. In the 8th inning Kennys Vargas scored on a wild pitch by Brandon Lodge. Brandon Lodge went 3 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1. R.J. Alvarez pitched a scoreless and hitless 9th inning, the only innings where Beloit didn't have at least 2 hits.

The Kernels plated an unearned run in the 9th inning. Alex Yarbrough scored when Eddie Rosario threw past 1st base on a potential game-ending double play ball. Tyler Jones (4-5) picked up the win for the Snappers in 8 innings of work. He allowed 7 runs (2 earned) on 10 hits. He struck out 7 and walked 0. D.J. Baxendale pitched the 9th inning, allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit while striking out 2 and walking 1.
