King Blasts West Michigan Past Dragons 5-3

Dayton, Ohio-Jason King belted two home runs to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 5-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Monday night. A crowd of 8,031 saw the game at Fifth Third Field.

The Whitecaps have won two straight after the Dragons took the series opener on Saturday. The loss dropped the Dragons to 27-34 in the second half with seven games to play.

The Dragons took the lead in the first inning when Juan Perez sliced a single to left, went to third on Joe Terry's single to right, and scored on Yorman Rodriguez's fielder's choice to make it 1-0.

West Michigan scored an unearned run in the second to tie the game and then took the lead in the fourth on a two-run home run by King to make it 3-1. King's second homer of the night in the sixth made it 4-1. It was King's seventh home run of the year.

The Dragons got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Rodriguez led off the inning with a ground rule double and then scored on Nick O'Shea's two-out run-scoring single to make it 4-2. But West Michigan scored in the top of the ninth to again take a three-run lead at 5-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, O'Shea led off with a double to left field and Yovan Gonzalez singled him to third. O'Shea scored on Jefry Sierra's ground out to make it 5-3, but the next two batters were retired to end the game.

Dragons starting pitcher Robert Stephenson worked the first four innings. He allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks and four strikeouts. Carlos Gonzalez replaced Stephenson to start the fifth and worked three innings, allowing three hits and one run with a walk and two strikeouts. Dan Jensen tossed the final two innings. He allowed two hits and one run with one walk and no strikeouts.

The Dragons finished with 10 hits. Rodriguez and O'Shea each had two. Sean Buckley extended his hitting streak to nine straight games with a single in four at-bats.

The Dragons (27-34) battle the Whitecaps (33-30) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. to close out the four-game series. Cincinnati Reds all-star first baseman Joey Votto is scheduled to play for the Dragons on an injury rehabilitation assignment. James Allen (7-4, 3.80) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Jeff Ferrell (6-4, 3.39). The Great Lakes Loons open a three-game series in Dayton on Wednesday.
