Lancaster Stormers News Release
Jason Belcher had three parts of the cycle in the first four innings, driving in five runs to pace Somerset's 9-2 victory over the Barnstormers Tuesday evening at TD Bank Park.
With the win, the Patriots set a new Atlantic record with 84 victories in a season.
Belcher homered to lead off the second, singled home a run in the third and stroked a three-run triple in the fourth as the Patriots built an 8-0 lead against Trey Hodges (5-5). Jeff Nettles also contributed three hits, including a pair of doubles while Sean Smith had three hits and two stolen bases.
Jim Magrane (15-4) limited the Barnstormers to four hits and one unearned run over seven innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine.
The Patriots took control of the game in the third. Smith led off with a bloop hit to left field and stole second. Hodges retired Anthony Granato but walked Noah Hall. He worked ahead of Nettles, 0-2, but the Somerset third baseman rode the next offering into the left center alley for a two-run double and a 3-0 lead. Belcher followed with a broken bat single over the head of Anderson Machado as the Patriots took a 4-0 advantage.
Somerset's onslaught continued the next inning. Again, it was Smith getting the inning underway, this time with a line drive base hit to left. He again stole second, his 52nd swipe of the season. Granato grounded out, but Hall singled home Smith with a fly ball that landed in short right. Nettles doubled down the left field line, sending Hall to third, and Nilson Teilon was hit by a pitch for the second inning in a row. Belcher then cleared the bases with a sharp grounder inside the first base bag as the Patriots led, 8-0.
Aaron Herr drove in the only run off Magarne in the sixth, doubling home Jason Cooper, who reached on an error by second baseman Teilon. L.J. Biernbaum added a bases loaded walk in the eighth.
The Barnstormers play their final road game of 2009 on Wednesday evening at 7:05, sending Neal Musser (1-2) to the mound against Brian Adams (13-7). Lancaster will finish out the remainder of the schedule at home with a five-game series against Southern Maryland beginning Thursday. Fireworks are on tap for games Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available for the entire series at www.lancasterbarnstormersonline.com or by calling 717-509-HITS.
NOTES: Herr has batted safely in nine straight with 14 RBI...He has driven in 33 runs in his last 28 games...His total of 83 RBI is tied for second in Barnstormers history.
