Patriots Set New Atlantic League Record For Wins

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-2 at TD Bank Ballpark on Tuesday to set a new Atlantic League record with their 84th win of the season.

Patriots starter Jim Magrane (15-4) tied Brian Adams (2007) for wins in a single season after tossing seven scoreless innings with four hits and nine strikeouts.

The Patriots scored to take the lead 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning on a solo homerun by catcher Jason Belcher (5).

Somerset scored in the bottom of the third inning after center fielder Sean Smith singled, right fielder Noah Hall walked, third baseman Jeff Nettles doubled to drive both runners home, and Belcher followed with an RBI single to score Nettles for the 4-0 advantage.

The Patriots added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Smith singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Hall. Nettles then doubled, second baseman Nilson Teilon was hit by a pitch, and Belcher cleared the bases with a triple down the first base line to make the score 8-0.

Lancaster scored in the top of the sixth inning after left fielder Jason Cooper reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by third baseman Aaron Herr to make the score 8-1.

Somerset added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 9-1 after first baseman Joe Burke singled, left fielder Elliott Ayala singled, shortstop Anthony Granato walked, and Hall hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Burke.

The Barnstormers scored a run in the top of the eighth inning after second baseman Lloyd Turner walked, Cooper singled, Herr walked, and right fielder L.J. Biernbaum walked to force home Turner.

Lancaster starter Trey Hodges (5-5) got the loss after allowing eight earned runs and nine hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Wednesday, September 16th against the Lancaster Barnstormers.
