Burlington Bees News Release
Grand Rapids, MI - The Burlington Bees (20-12, 54-48) had their eleven-game hitting streak snapped tonight by the West Michigan Whitecaps (18-14, 51-51) in an 8-0 loss at Fifth Third Ballpark. Dallas Trahern (6-8) pitched seven innings and allowed just three hits for the win. Trahern's sinker left the Bees' offense grounded, as the team hit just three balls in the air the entire night. The Bees were shutout for just the third time this year. This series is tied 1-1, but the Bees still lead the season series 4-2 over the Whitecaps.
Bees' starter Justin Sherman (3-4) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. He tied a season-high with six strikeouts. The Whitecaps got on the board in the bottom of the first. Clete Thomas led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by Nick McIntyre. After a strikeout, McIntyre advanced to third on a single by Brett Dlugach and scored on a sacrifice fly from Luis Sabino. The Whitecaps didn't score again until the sixth. McIntyre led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Jeff Frazier. Frazier moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out triple by Jody Roughton.
Adam Rowe pitched the seventh inning for the Bees and allowed two runs after two outs. Thomas singled, McIntyre was hit by a pitch, they moved to second and third on a wild pitch, and scored when Frazier ripped a double down the left field line. Zane Carlson allowed the final two runs in the eighth inning. Sabino drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a single by Roughton. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. After a groundout, Sabino scored when catcher Felipe Del Rosario threw the ball over Carlson's head into centerfield for an error. Rougton scored the Whitecaps final run on a groundout by Brooks Colvin. The second run was unearned. Anthony Tomey and PJ Finigan each pitched a scoreless inning in relief to finish the game for West Michigan.
The Bees and Whitecaps resume this series tomorrow night at 6:00 Central time. RH Gabe DeHoyos (4-1, 1.48) will make his second career start for the Bees against RH Jari Jurrjens (7-5, 3.33) for the Whitecaps. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:40.
