Bees Take Down Rainiers Friday Night
September 9, 2023 - Pacific Coast League (PCL)
Salt Lake Bees News Release
A pair of three-run innings was all the support Jake Kalish and the Salt Lake Bees (25-36) pitching staff would need in a 6-2 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers (35-26) on Friday night.
The Bees jumped out early with a three-run rally in the second inning, scoring on a Jack Lopez triple, Orlando Martinez double and a wild pitch in the frame. Three innings later Jared Walsh took a 1-0 pitch over the wall in the deepest part of the ballpark to add another three runs to the tally. For Walsh it was his third consecutive game with a long ball. The Salt Lake offense combined for 11 hits including multi-hit games from Michael Stefanic, Walsh and Lopez. Stefanic raised his batting average to .363 on the year as he continues his quest for the PCL batting title.
Jake Kalish picked up his eighth victory of the year after a strong start of five innings pitched and a single run allowed. Eric Torres, Kelvin Caceres and Reyes Moronta were sturdy in relief of Kalish. Torres threw two scoreless frames while striking out three and Caceres posted a scoreless eighth. The Rainiers were able to scratch a run across against Reyes Moronta in the ninth, but Moronta struck out Tacoma catcher Luis Torrens to quell the threat. The pitching staff was helped by great defense in the field, including Orlando Martinez and the rehabbing Zach Neto cutting down Jarred Kelenic at home plate in the fifth inning to get the Bees out of the inning unscathed.
The Bees have taken three of the first four games of the series with Tacoma. Game five will be on Saturday night at Smith's Ballpark at 6:35 p.m
