York Revolution News Release
(York, Pa.) - New Britain scored five runs in the eighth inning to erase the fourth York lead of the night and the Bees withstood a Revolution rally to take a wild 11-8 win on Wednesday night at PeoplesBank Park. The Bees (8-11) draw even in the series and will come back to meet the Revs (12-8) in the rubber game on Thursday.
With the home side up 7-6 in the eighth, Jonathan Roof led off with a double, then Kevin Rivers drew a walk. After a pitching change and a popout, Brandon Chaves laced a single up the middle to give the Bees an 8-7 lead. Chaves was eventually caught stealing second base, but following a walk and a single Jovan Rosa took Ron Schreurs deep to left center for a three-run home run.
The Revs scraped together a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Keith Castillo single, but Josh Wilson grounded out with the bases loaded as York left men on every base for the third time on the night. A leadoff baserunner in the ninth also went nowhere as Isaias Tejeda bounced into the game-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Grady Wood (1-1) earned the win with an inning of one-run, two-hit relief. Ty'Relle Harris (1-2) allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to reach without retiring anyone in the eighth, suffering the loss. Craig Stem took his fourth save after coming on to get four outs.
The scoring barrage began early as Andres Perez broke the ice with a solo home run over the Arch Nemesis in the first inning. The Bees then manufactured in the third after Rivers doubled and score on a sac bunt and groundout.
York broke through for three runs in the fourth on a two-run Tejeda single and Perez sac fly, taking a 4-1 lead but leaving the bases loaded for the second straight inning. New Britain did not waste the chance to take advantage, scoring three of their own in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by James Skelton and a Greg Golson run-scoring double.
The Revs took their third lead of the night in their half of the fifth when Castillo took a pitch on the forearm and eventually scored on a wild pitch. This lead was similarly short-lived, however, as New Britain countered with a pair in the sixth.
Roof blooped a single between second base and center field, then after a walk and a strikeout, Chaves crushed a line drive that nearly decapitated Revs pitcher Ricardo Gomez, bringing home the tying run on the single. With Skelton at the plate, Castillo let the ball-four pitch get by him. Rivers scampered home on the passed ball and the Bees had their first lead at 6-5.
York made its next move after the seventh inning stretch. Bryan Pounds reached on an error and James Simmons doubled on a sharp grounder down the left field line. Pounds came home on a Castillo groundout, then after another groundball, Michael Rockett pounded a liner off New Britain reliever Shawn Haviland and beat out the ensuing throw to first. Rockett's frozen rope plated Simmons to give the Revs a 7-6 advantage, their fourth and final lead of the night.
Chaves paved the way for the Bee bats, driving home four of the team's season-high 11. Rosa and Skelton also picked up three and two RBIs, respectively.
Tejeda, Telvin Nash, Castillo, and Rockett each knocked a pair of hits, and Perez joined Tejeda and Castillo with his own two-RBI night.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Mike McClendon went 4.1 innings for York, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits. Josh Zeid absorbed New Britain's no-decision after four innings of four-run, six-hit ball.
Notes: A night after playing their shortest nine-inning game of the season, the Revs set a season high for game length at three hours and 35 minutes. The Revs and Bees combined for 19 runs in one game after matching up for 21 total in their previous five games. Telvin Nash now has a 10-game home hitting streak to begin the season, batting 14-38 (.368) at PeoplesBank Park in 2016. The Revs saw a five-game home winning streak snapped. York will send Jorge Martinez to the hill to face New Britain's Kyle Simon in the Thursday night rubber game. Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile app beginning at 6:10 p.m. with Darrell Henry and Will DeBoer on the call. Thursday night marks Swim Night presented by the YMCA of York & York County. It is also the team's first Jersey Auction of the season, presented by PSECU and benefiting Children's Miracle Network. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
