St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - Wuilmer Becerra delivered a pair of two-out RBI hits as the St. Lucie Mets clipped the Fort Myers Miracle 4-3 on Wednesday night at Tradition Field.
The Mets recovered from Tuesday's 14-0 blowout loss to take two of three in the series from the first-place Miracle. The Mets are now two games out of first in the FSL South Division.
Scarlyn Reyes cruised through six scoreless innings before being ambushed for three runs with no outs in the seventh. Still, Reyes picked up his sixth win and his second straight quality start.
Miracle starter Keaton Steele retired the first nine batters he faced until Patrick Biondi opened the fourth with a double. Vinny Siena followed with another double to put the Mets up 1-0. With two outs, Steele opted to pitch around newly acquired David Thompson to face Becerra. Steele paid when Becerra smacked a run-scoring single that brought home Siena to make it 2-0.
Thompson alertly ran first to third on Becerra's single and he was able to score on a wild pitch to put the Mets up 3-0.
Becerra belted a two-out RBI double to center field in the sixth that brought in John Mora for a 4-0 Mets lead.
The Miracle opened the seventh with back-to-back doubles from Edgar Corcino and A.J. Murray against Reyes. Joe Maloney then tattooed a two-run homer that cut the Mets lead to 4-3.
Reyes was lifted for Robby Coles, who walked the first batter he faced but retired the next three in order.
Paul Paez struck out two in a perfect eighth.
Corey Taylor pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and finished the game by striking out Alex Perez. It is Taylor's 13th save overall and fourth save in the last six days.
In his FSL debut, Thompson went 0 for 2 with a walk and a run. He made a handful of nice defensive plays at third base.
Next Up: The Mets (42-38, 7-6) travel to Roger Dean Stadium for a one-game series against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
