Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - The positive: Rays number two starter Alex Cobb made it back onto the mound for the first time since his Fall 2014 Tommy John surgery. That in itself cannot be understated.

The negative: Cobb's rehab outing didn't really help the Stone Crabs.

Cobb allowed three runs and only recorded two outs in the first inning, and fellow recent TJ patient Nick Sawyer gave up three of his own in the second. Charlotte eventually fell 7-2 to Bradenton on Wednesday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

Cobb (0-1) appeared a bit amped up at the start, walking Tito Polo to lead off the game. After forcing a pop out from Cole Tucker, Cobb walked fellow rehabber Elias Diaz to put two on with one out. It looked like Cobb might escape the jam after Jerrick Suiter lined out, but Kevin Kramer singled in a run and Jordan Luplow followed with a two-run double, making it 3-0 Marauders and knocking Cobb out of the game.

Nick Sawyer, who underwent the invasive elbow procedure in April 2015, ran into trouble after getting Cobb's last out of the first. Pablo Reyes and Polo knocked back-to-back one-out singles in the second, the latter of which scored Reyes after he stole second. Diaz walked again two batters later, which brought Suiter to the plate. The Marauders first baseman drove a single to score Polo, and a throw from Cristian Toribio to second to try and nab Suiter went wide, bringing in Diaz for a 6-0 Bradenton lead

Polo added a solo home run leading off the fourth against Benton Moss to make it 7-0. Moss, the regularly scheduled starter, pitched very well, allowing just the one run across 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts.

The Stone Crabs did find their way on the board in the ninth. Justin Williams singled to lead off the frame, and Mac James reached on a throwing error on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one out. Grant Kay lined an RBI single to right to score Williams, and James came home two batters later on an RBI groundout by Thomas Milone.

The Stone Crabs have one more game at home before venturing to Daytona Beach for the weekend, battling Palm Beach in a one-off on Thursday night. LHP Grayson Garvin makes a rehab appearance for Charlotte against Palm Beach RHP Matt Pearce (7-5, 2.58). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35. It's Thirsty Thursday, meaning $2 domestic drafts and $3 domestic bottles of ice cold beer through the fifth inning!
