Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Lightning knocked out Charlotte Sports Park on Monday afternoon, but the Stone Crab bats brought the thunder first.

Justin Williams hit a two-run home run in the first inning, Joe McCarthy and Thomas Milone both tripled to manufacture runs later on, and the Stone Crabs beat the Marauders 4-3 in six storm-shortened innings on Independence Day.

The Stone Crabs began their assault early on Marauders starter Jonathan Brubaker (0-3). The lanky right-hander hit McCarthy with one out in the first inning, and Alec Sole beat out a double play grounder to keep the inning alive. Williams strode up and wrecked a fastball clear over the fence in right to put Charlotte ahead 2-0.

Bradenton rallied to tie the game in the third against Chris Pike (3-6). Pablo Reyes singled on a bunt to lead off the inning, and Kevin Kramer drove a base hit to center that put Reyes on third. Kramer ended up on second after the throw. The rehabbing Elias Diaz and cleanup hitter Chase Simpson hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to knot the score at 2.

But the Stone Crabs, determined to win their fourth straight, never wavered. McCarthy ripped a triple to the wall in right leading off the bottom of the inning and scored on a Sole groundout to re-take the lead for Charlotte. In the following inning, Cristian Toribio singled with two out, and Milone tripled into the corner in right to drive in Charlotte's fourth run.

A third run allowed in the sixth did not deter Pike, who was technically credited with a complete game victory. The win was Charlotte's sixth in seven games.

The Stone Crabs battle the Marauders again on Tuesday, as RHP Brent Honeywell (4-0, 1.57) takes on RHP Yeudy Garcia (3-5, 2.17) in a battle of aces. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
