Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (8-6, 50-33) were shutout for the second time in three nights as the Daytona Tortugas (8-3, 44-36) completed a sweep with a 7-0 final on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. It was the seventh time this season the Yankees were held scoreless in a game.

Will Carter retired the first nine batters he faced before the Tortugas broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. Ronald Bueno hit a leadoff double and scored, two batters later, on a single by Brian O'Grady, giving Daytona a 1-0 lead.

Blake Butler led off the fifth with a single into left. Home plate umpire Reid Joyner awarded Butler third base after Carter mistakenly tossed a "live" baseball into the Tampa dugout, in hopes of receiving a fresh baseball in return. Instead, the two-base error led to an unearned run as Butler scored on a groundout by Chadwick Tromp.

Carter (L, 1-3) pitched through the seventh, yielding two runs (one earned) on five hits. The right-hander walked a pair, struck out three and threw 49 of 81 pitches for strikes in his third-consecutive quality start.

RHP Wendolyn Bautista (W, 2-0) held the Yankees scoreless in six and a third innings, scattering four hits, a walk and a hit-batter. Bautista tallied three strikeouts and threw 47 of 66 pitches for strikes.

Daytona loaded the bases against RHP Gabriel Encinas in the eighth and former Tampa Yankee Angelo Gumbs grounded a two-run single into center, giving the Tortugas a 4-0 lead.

Bueno and Blake Trahan hit back-to-back singles with one out in the ninth off LHP Jonny Drozd. O'Grady followed with a ground-rule double, scoring Bueno. Gavin LaValley capped the scoring for Daytona with a two-run single.

Thairo Estrada (2-for-4, 2B) recorded a multi-hit game and went 5-for-12 in the series. Zack Zehner (1-for-3, BB) extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the eighth. Mason Williams (1-for-4) collected his first hit of his rehab assignment with Tampa.

Up next, the Yankees host the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Thursday before a weekend series in Jupiter. LHP James Reeves (2-1, 1.71 ERA) is scheduled to make the start for Tampa against LHP Trent Szkutnik (0-1, 9.00 ERA) for Lakeland at 7:00 p.m.

Every Thursday Tampa Yankees home game, fans can enjoy 14 oz. draft beer for $2 and 1/2 price regular soda from 6:00pm-8:00pm. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
