Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

(PORT ST. LUCIE, FL) July 6, 2016 - One night after setting season-high totals in runs (14) and hits (20), the Fort Myers Miracle were held to just three runs and five hits by four St. Lucie pitchers as the host Mets won the rubber game of this three-game series by a 4-3 score on Wednesday night at Tradition Field. The loss was just the third in the last ten games for the Miracle, who remain in first-place by two games over both the Mets and the Charlotte Stone Crabs in the Florida State League South Division.

The Mets broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning off Miracle starter Keaton Steele. Patrick Biondi started the frame with a double, and that was followed by another two-bagger off the bat of Vinny Siena, scoring Biondi to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, with two outs and runners on first and third, Wuilmer Beccera lined a single to center to score Siena to increase the lead to 2-0. A wild pitch by Steele with a runner on third base produced the final run of the inning, giving the hosts a 3-0 advantage.

Beccera drove in what would prove to be the deciding run of the game in the sixth as he lined a double to center, scoring John Mora, who had led off the frame with a single.

The Miracle finally broke through in the seventh off of Mets starter Scarlyn Reyes. Edgar Corcino started things off with a double to right field, and A.J. Murray followed that with a double to center, scoring Corcino, making the score 4-1. Joe Maloney then blasted his first homerun of the season on a long fly to left-center field to draw the Miracle to within 4-3. Reyes was then replaced by Robert Coles, who walked Alex Perez before retiring the final three batters of the inning to end the threat.

Reyes (6-8) picked up the win for St. Lucie as he allowed five hits and three runs in six innings of work, walking two and striking out one. Corey Taylor retired the Miracle in order in the ninth inning to record his 13th save of the season. Steele (4-7) suffered the loss for Fort Myers after allowing six hits and four runs in his six innings of work, walking one and striking out three.

The Miracle (43-39, 9-4) will now return home for a five-day, six-game homestand. The Bradenton Marauders will be in town on Thursday for a pair of games, which will include the completion of a suspended game from June 26. The game will be picked up in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Miracle leading 4-0, and will be played out to nine innings. The regularly scheduled game, which will be seven innings in length, will follow. The action begins at 6:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium. Both games will be broadcast on www.miraclebaseball.com with the 'Voice of the Miracle' Brice Zimmerman.
