Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Joe McCarthy hit his first home run as a Charlotte Stone Crab and Justin Williams went deep for the third time in four games, but the Bradenton Marauders went wild on offense to beat the Stone Crabs 11-5 on Tuesday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
Brent Honeywell (4-1) had the worst start of his professional career, lasting just 4.1 innings and allowing six runs, tied for a career high. Honeywell hadn't allowed more than two runs in any of his nine previous 2016 starts. His ERA sits at 2.41 despite the rough outing.
McCarthy, who has been a massive gust of fresh air since arriving from Bowling Green, hit his first Florida State League home run in the bottom of the fourth with Charlotte trailing 3-0. McCarthy is hitting .303/.385/.485 through his first 11 games as a Stone Crab.
Williams, if it's possible, has been even hotter. The Rays' No. 14 prospect launched a ball that looked like it touched a cloud and roared back down, soaring over the baseball boardwalk in right-center straight out of the stadium. It was a two-run shot for Williams, who is 8-for-15 with three home runs and 5 RBI in his last four games.
Bradenton, though, managed to out-muscle the Stone Crabs over the course of the night, knocking out Honeywell in the fifth. The Marauders tacked on five runs late against a wild Jose Alvarado to blow the game open.
Catcher Taylor Gushue was 2-for-4 with three runs scored for Bradenton. Cole Tucker, Tito Polo, and Elvis Escobar also chipped in multi-hit games. Yeudy Garcia (4-5) allowed just the two home runs through six strong innings.
The Stone Crabs and Marauders conclude their epic six-game series on $2 Wednesday at Charlotte Sports Park, featuring $2 parking, reserved level tickets, hot dogs, and sodas. Rays RHP Alex Cobb makes his first appearance in a game since September 2014 coming off Tommy John surgery, starting for the Stone Crabs against LHP Stephen Tarpley (3-2, 3.91). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
