Worcester Tornadoes News Release
The Newark Bears scored nine unanswered runs in a 9-3 win over the Tornadoes on Thursday night in Worcester. The Bears plated four runs in two different innings (the fifth and ninth) to win the season series 8-7.
Ryan Lobban got the loss (4-2) despite giving up just one earned run. The Worcester southpaw allowed four runs in total on six hits and three walks, while striking out six batters in 5.2 innings. Casey Gaynor earned the win, also going 5.2 innings. The Bears' starter struck out three, walked one, allowed eight hits and three runs (but only one earned). He induced 11 ground ball outs for Worester batters.
The Tornadoes took the lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Alex Trezza. Both Abraham Nunez and Chris Colabello scored on the play, with Colabello sliding around a tag by the catcher Billy Alvino and touching home with his hand.
Worcester added another run in the second, when Alex Nunez plated Cameron Monger from second (after he had doubled). The Tornadoes were held scoreless the rest of the way.
In his two starts against Worcester, Gaynor has two wins and has allowed 13 runs, all in the first two innings. Mikey Mehlich earned the save, since he entered the game in the eighth when it was 5-3 and the Tornadoes had the tying runs on base.
Nick Serino retired all four batters he faced in his outing. Sean Gregory allowed an unearned run on one hit and one (intentional) walk and added a strikeout. Mike Gedman allowed four runs and four hits plus a walk, with all but the free pass happening with two outs in the ninth and an error earlier in the frame (meaning all the runs were unearned).
The Tornadoes will be back home a week from Friday with a six-game homestand to end their home schedule in 2011. In the meantime, they'll take on the Brockton Rox for a three-game set starting Friday. After an off-day on Monday, they have a crucial midweek series against the Pittsfield Colonials.
