Bears raise over $62,000 for central PA charities in 2003-04

HERSHEY â The HERSHEY BEARS announced today the totals of donations made by the AHL's most senior franchise to charitable organizations during the 2003-04 season. A total of $60,224 dollars were raised to benefit such charities as the Multiple Sclerosis Society, World Blindness Outreach program, United Disabilities Services and the Hershey Area Minor Hockey Association.
The BEARS held a throwback jersey auction on November 30th against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, with proceeds benefiting the M.S. Society. Over $26,000 was raised by auctioning off the 1958-59 HERSHEY game jerseys worn by the players that night.
A second jersey auction was held on March 17th in honor of St. Patrick's day, with the game worn sweaters auctioned off following HERSHEY'S game with the Hartford Wolfpack. The $25,000 proceeds from the post-game auction benefited both the World Blindness Outreach and the Hershey Area Minor Hockey Association.
A new partnership between the BEARS and United Disabilities Services led to the creation of a 2004 calendar featuring BEARS players and U.D.S. Service Dogs in candid shots around GIANT Center. The sale of the calendars at HERSHEY BEARS home games raised $9,224 dollars to benefit New Life Assistance Dogs, a branch of U.D.S.
The BEARS and Shalom House, a shelter for women and children in the Greater Harrisburg area, held the first annual HERSHEY BEARS Golf Classic on October 6th. Over $2,000 was raised in a single afternoon through silent auction and donations to benefit the charity.
The team's annual Teddy Bear Toss on December 13th collected over 500 bears to hospitals and other local charities as part of the HERSHEY BEARS commitment to serve underprivileged children in the central Pennsylvania community.
In addition to the monetary donations made by the BEARS this season, over 500 local charities received HERSHEY BEARS items in 2003-04 to auction off to raise funds throughout central Pennsylvania.
